Do you like your exhaust note? Don't update.

Is your exhaust quiet / softer than it was? An update is very unlikely to fix it and you're probably out of luck.

Respectfully disagree. The only feedback on these forums for the 2021 is that people think the update keeps the exhaust the same or makes it slightly louder. Nobody with a 2021 has said any of the updates have made their exhaust quieter.

So I do like the note. With MPE. But seems like more ppl with 2020 are stating their frustration. Not many 2021 opinions. I'd like for the note to get more agressive and throaty of course.

I could be wrong, but I think the only thing u can really change for the exhaust sound thru an update is the burbles and pops, maybe a bit louder, but I think that would happen with a power increase.

I sent an e-mail to the following at BMW:

Anthony.Cavanaugh@bmwna.com,
Rich.Powers@bmwna.com,
Shaun.Bugbee@bmwna.com,
Bernhard.Kuhnt@bmwna.com,
customerrelations@bmwusa.com

Complaining about the detuned exhaust note. Just spoke with a representative who informed me that it was a "regulatory change", and there was no way to A) roll back to an earlier iDrive version, B) coming to all "M" model cars.

I have requested a monetary credit to help offset the purchase of the MPE for my 2020 M340I.

I would suggest anyone having the same issues to do the same. Very quick turn-around, less than 6 hours.

No way BMW is going to credit people for an exhaust. Good Luck though because I'd do the same thing if I had a 2020.

Has anyone been told the updates are mandatory, or implied it could effect warranty or something?

Lol unfortunately since they are up against a potential class action lawsuit, they are going to have to. They changed the exhaust characteristics without informing anyone of it, after they had already bought the car. Many people test drove a 2020 and ordered a 2021 based on that experience and are receiving something completely different. It seems like the complaints are starting to pile up and it's going to hurt their pockets one way or another.

I took my car in for maintenance a few weeks ago and left a note over my center screen saying "please do not update the software" and they didn't update it. They even removed the update that was on my car so I no longer get prompted to update it.

Bought '21 without noticing sound reduction from '20.
Just had MPE installed on my M340i. Issue solved.
I would prefer a switch like I had on Porsche, but happy with new sound. (Wife thinks a bit loud)
Under $2K installed. Pricey, but the Porsche PE option was $2950.
