Isn't this already common knowledge? The X3M competition has over 500hp and the next M3/4 should share the same engine.

That is incorrect. The name of the series and classes has changed a bit over the years, but more or less from 2013-2015 BMW made the Z4 GTE (known as GTLM in Imsa) and the Z4 GT3 (known as GTD in Imsa). The GTE car was run by Rahal Letterman Lanigan (RLL) in GTLM and Turner Motorsports ran a Z4 GT3 in GTD. From 2016-2017 RLL ran the M6 GTE (GTLM) and Turner ran the M6 GT3 (GTD). For 2018 to present, RLL has run the M8 GTE (GTLM) while Turner continues to use the M6 GT3 (GTD).

So yes the M6 did run in GTLM (as did a Z4). We know for certain that the M4 GT3 will replace the M6 for 2021, still no confirmation that will translate to an M4 GTE (GTLM). As mentioned in my other post, that is entirely possible based on the past, but I also think it is possible that BMW uses its future mid-engined “halo” car in GTLM as it would align more with the competition.

@Pic18 appreciate the complete summary! Scrippy GTLM is considered the factory team... GTD/GT3 is not.
This is a pic of both M6 in IMSA probably in 2016

Very nice of the M team to get all the M cars on the track competing. M8 M4 and M2.

I say ditch the M one off and get some INDYCAR/F1/protype going as a motorsport crown.

Grille is not looking good. Also this whole thing with the 500 horsepower, the current generation Mercedes C63 AMG S has 500 horsepower and that has been out for almost 5 years since early 2015.

Yes I would think so. The M4 Competition is the coupe version of X3 and X4 M Competition. Too bad people have to wait until 2021 for the coupe and sedan versions that are supposedly done.

They have been known to perform the shady business practice of de-tuning, though. See M2C.

This is not street car it has to stick to rules I assume, without rules manufacturer will all probably go pumping 2000 hp engine...

Are you referring to the M2C as being detuned compared to the M4C? If so that’s because the 2 is a lower, less expensive model than the 4. The M3/M4 are not lower models than the X3/X4 M, they are sister cars. They’re not detuning the M3/M4, there’s be no reason to in the model hierarchy.

You can also interpret this as not running as much boost over the NA configuration, so as to deliberately produce a more driveable and linear throttle response.

I would personally consider this a plus point. (until we have electric superchargers! ;-)

It’s a race car. Probably slightly stylized for the ad/photo.

Yes, it's an illustration of the race car. It is not an actual photo of the race car. People are commenting on how great this looks with the big grills, but you can't even see half of them. And it's not a real picture, it's just a drawing. It has no bearing on how the G80/G82 will look.

BMW Again Confirms G82 M4 Will Exceed 500 HP in M4 GT3 Preview
So ... for 10% extra power we pay 20% extra weight, four wheel drive and a shitty gearbox?

Makes the 0-60 time look better, but I really hope M-division have got something magic lurking up their sleeves or this doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

Looking at the ring footage I think they do. I suspect a big leap in chassis and aero technology helping the G8X crush the F8X. And that extra power doesn’t hurt down long straights and the extra AWD traction doesn’t hurt when getting on the power early. So not really magic just physics should make the new car leaps and bounds faster and that will ultimately be the claim to fame for this generation, track times, stability and effortless speed on and off the track.

Few will fully use it many will be seduced by it.

I predict the same sort of reviews as the Nissan GTR.
