SPECULATING F80 M3 time
(sources: https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/hockenheim-gp & https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/hockenheim-short) We can use Hockheim short track as a comparison to guess how the m340xi compares to the F80 M3 on the Hockenheim GP track. Using the Mercedes AMG GT as a benchmark we can see that the F80 M3 is ~2.7 seconds slower than the AMG GT on the Hockenheim short. On the Hockenheim GP we can see that the m340 is ~5.7 seconds slower than the AMG GT. Furthermore, we can see that there was a 45 second difference between the Hockenheim GP and Short time for the AMG GT. So using these as a benchmark, we can speculate that an F80 M3 would time approximately 1:58.10 or about 3 seconds faster than the m340xi. Hockenheim Short (HmS) --------------------------- F80 M3 - 1:13.10 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S - 1:10.40 Hockenheim GP (HmGP) --------------------------- G20 m340xi - 2:01.10 Hypothetical F80 M3 time: 1:58.10 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S - 1:55.40 Discussion 3 second difference between F80 M3 and m340xi. This bodes really well for the m340xi as there is room for tuning and modification that could put it far above the F80 M3. Last edited by kamendex; 04-11-2020 at 01:25 PM.. |

When you look at the pricing on a brand new M340i it's in a similar range as a CPO F80 M3. Different cars for sure but not so different that they don't potentially appeal to the same buyer. the performance of the M340i in a straight line is close enough to an F80 M3 they people see them as rivals - but I would think they once you get them both on a track the F80 will display its superiority - I would think the difference in lap times would be fairly significant.

One thing that most people forget: repeatability. A hot lap is one thing, but when doing 20 minute sessions, 10 laps at a time, the street oriented car will see noticeable decreases in performance threshold as engine, oil, brake, transmission, differential etc temp increases. The M cars have a lot of engineering built in for cooling that a street 3 series does not.

Mine was ordered with the enhanced track and extended M package that includes bigger front brakes and extra cooling for engine, transmission and brakes. Is that what you're referring to?

The irony is that Australia has never had XDrive sedans offered (apart from the M5 and now M340i) due to us not having such strong winter weather. You'd think they'd bring the RWD M340i here too. Not that I'd want that, I'm loving how point and shoot my AWD M340i is! |

Only on certain option packages. My M340 came with Bridgestone Touranza's. I had to buy Pilot Sports.

A simple mod can turn the m340 into a beast beyond the F80 and its S55. |
