I have an M3 comp (and a C63s) and have driven an M340i - Euro spec, as that's where I live - and unless you were pulling away from rest, the M3 is faster, as well as being sweeter to drive, crisper turn in etc. That's not to say the the M340i isn't a great car, it is, plus for the less committed driver, it's performance is more easily accessible due to the better traction. I might even buy one at some point, but after thrashing one and then driving the exact same road in my AMG, I know which is faster.

Of course if you take it to the extreme, a Golf R would beat both of my cars from a standing start if the roads were damp, but I can live with that fact.

Interesting video.

I swapped my 335d last year and narrowed it down to an F80 M3 and a M340i as the deals were similar. In the end l went for the M340i because of the better traction with the 4wd and as much as l wanted the M3, l figured the M340i would be an easier and more comfortable daily driver with the same pace as the M3 at road legal speeds in the UK.

I think this video shows that the M340i has moved performance on so much with the new 3 series that the only way the outgoing M3/M4’s will get the upper hand is on a race track or at illegal speeds. The M340i performs much better against the outgoing M’s than it arguably should, they are wonderful cars but are being left behind in the performance stakes and no doubt the new M3/M4 cars will step up to the plate with a noticeable increase in performance over the M340i, and restore balance across the entire 3/4 series ranges.

One issue we have now, is that with the extra performance, you are talking of significant speeds when "on it".

I drive my son's Clio GT sometimes and that's actually a lot of fun with 6 speed MT and only 128ps, just at not such crazy speeds as my cars.

When are allowed out again, I think I need to try a Golf R again.

Unless you need AWD for snow the gti is quicker and light on its feet; I had one. Excellent daily driver. MK7
