Very interesting discussion about the carbon fiber roof. I think I'm on the right thread to show you some photos of my M340i with... a carbon fiber roof

Because I wanted to be as close as possible to an M5 or an M8, I chose Marina Bay Blue as color... just kidding

I'm not a frustrated BMW driver who can't own a ///M car but just a bimmer who purchases the car that suits me the best and takes all the nicest options from the BMW catalogue

If I want to get a carbon fiber roof on my new daily driver only because I think it’s aesthetically pleasing, I will, because BMW has crunched the numbers and it makes sense for them to offer that as an option on a car I’m interested in. Personally I’m going with a sunroof, but that’s not the point.

If someone wants to mod a G20 with a fake carbon fiber wrap on the entire car, and cheap aftermarket M parts, who cares? Just laugh and move on. ✌��

Honestly there's no problem with anything that you just said. BUT, you (and everyone else here) have to understand and be prepared for the reaction you're going to get from many (bmw drivers or anyone else for that matter) who sees that as you attempting to recreate or replicate the real thing that they assume you simply cant afford.

People dont just buy M-body kits and slap them on a 318i because they "chose not to buy an M3, cause they wanted a more practical car, you know" ... so unfortunately, its the world we live in.

I reiterate, my boss's boss , which I'm sure could afford multiple M cars on just his bonus (buy, not finance or lease) drove an E46 with M body kit.
Think he gave a damn! While I drove an F82.
I even joked with him, asking if it was an M3.. he laughed and explained he bought it used and that's how it came.. we both laughed and that was it…
He didn't care, and neither did I, and life proceeded to move on!

Oooh but maybe I should have berated him for his more practical choice???

Grow up! M owners are not that special… you're putting this on par with stolen valor!

I 💯 understand there will always be haters, that’s just part of life. If someone can’t afford an “True M” car, more power to them to aspire with what they can afford.

Personally, a new car every 3-4 years built to my liking is one of my least expensive habits 😂. I spend more yearly on Golf and Wine ⛳️ 🍷

bmw is going to continue to blur the lines between m performance and m models. Just look at the upcoming s68 engine that will be used in the next m5 but also shared with the m60i models.
I would not be surprised if the evolution of the s58 is a hybrid engine that will be shared by the equivalent m340i and m3. M purists have been hanging on to that thread that m performance models don’t have “real m” engines. they will surely lose their minds when this happens.

There is also a difference between people doing fake m conversions versus selecting a bmw factory option such as this carbon roof.

That color is super cool. I was gonna go frozen on my new m340i x build but they shut down the whole individual thing for a few months and all that.

Honestly, the biggest issue for me with this car is the new display, and the lack of a shifter.

Lack of a shifter is a throwback to the e65. Not my cup of tea at all. It's a legitimate mental block.

So been reading all the “M” arguments for awhile. Just signed up so here goes first post for me. On the topic, who really cares? I don’t. Comes down to the individual and want there wants are. I can afford to buy a M3, M5 etc… I just don’t need the true M car anymore I have owned M3’s and M5’s multiple of them over the years. I got out of the bmw world for a bit and returned recently and looked at all my options. Test drove a M4 etc, and I just don’t need the power and the at the price. Saw the M340i dravic Greg and loved the look and color. It was 21 dealer demo with 4K mikes in it scooped it up as soon as it went up for sale because it would have lasted a day maybe. I love the car, my wife loves the car. It’s fun to drive. I could care less about the badging it has that says M, it came with it so it stays on. I was at a cars and coffee last weekend an M3 competition pulled up and parked next to me. He got out and we talked over the next hour about our cars, he said how much he liked mine I said the same for his. He didn’t give me the riot act about how my car is not a “true M car” and how his is. We just enjoyed coffee and talking about our cars. That’s it and that’s how it should be instead of arguing. Tk his there own on what car they choose

Thanks!!! I may join my area's next car and coffee… idk, but I avoided going today, I guess I let these "true M" people get in my head! I've attended previous events with my F82 … this go around I felt self conscious about driving an MLite (hate the term) … but to be honest a majority of attendees are just car enthusiasts trying to enjoy a moment with other car nuts!

You are so right everything you say is on point I have g80 and an m340i, night and day difference. I feel the lci does dilute the M brand. The m340i only has an lsd in common with the g80. The only thing special about the m340i is the b58 nothing more nothing less, no m brand input like posters have claimed. It should just be 340i nothing more. Soon posers will be looking for an aftermarket grill to make their 340i "more special"

I don't understand why so many are getting upset about the M designation. With all due respect are but do you feel slighted because you own an M car and now suddenly there are lesser versions with an M designation?
I ordered a 23 M340i and it had nothing to do with the "M".
I wanted a 3 series with a 6 cyl engine. That's all.
Are those who want a hyper version of the 3 series going to stop buying an M3 because BMW is diluting the brand?
I don't think so. As long as that model performs the way the purchaser wants, they'll continue buying.
