I wanted to start this thread as just an FYI to G20 owners who may have experienced a drivetrain malfunction while at the track or during spirited driving with quick and sharp turns, and with < 50% fuel in the fuel tank.
Be aware that idrive may throw a “Drivetrain Malfunction” error during a sharp turn when at low fuel levels. This subsequently also gave off P0087 fuel rail/system pressure - too low. My first time experiencing this was at Thunderhill this weekend during Turn 14 and at just about 50% fuel. This caused the vehicle to go into limp mode and could not accelerate, but merely cruised at 3 mph. Eventually after about limping 1,000 ft to the pits, the car bogged and died. Could not restart the vehicle until after I refueled and filled up to 100%. After that, car was fine other than now my fuel gauge is not reading properly. My fuel gauge shows after filling up, that I am only at 50% fuel. Not sure if related to drivetrain malfunction caused this or coincidence. Going to the dealership to have that checked out under warranty. As per my conversation with Chrispy, this is a known issue to occur during these circumstances and it seems that refueling always seems to resolve this. PS. Learned how to switch transmission into neutral when not turning over. Push engine start/stop three times in quick succession, enter diagnostic mode after a few seconds. You can then switch into neutral.

I suppose the fix for now is to just ensure to always have at least 75% tank full, so that the issue doesn’t occur during high speed turns. In regard to my fuel gauge sensor, that is TBD. I have an appointment with the dealer Tuesday. Stay tuned….

Wow, glad you are OK. I would point out to the dealer that your safety was put at risk due to this scary and dangerous glitch. You were driving your “m” car in an “m” way, consistent with the branding…would have hoped bmw had tested for that scenario before putting an “m” label.

Update 9/7:
The issue has been resolved. Dealer replaced low pressure fuel pump which caused the incorrect fuel gauge reading and also my car to go into limp mode two times after my track day on the way home while turning onto a sharp highway on ramp. Covered under warranty, see attached invoice. I do believe that this might be an isolated incident as I seem to be the only B58 at the track that had the “drivetrain malfunction” but then had an incorrect fuel gauge caused by the low pressure fuel pump. It’s possible that I just had too little fuel during that sharp turn and that caused the LPFP to “burn out”.
