Dashcams selling driving info to insurance companies?
While I haven't read anything about this YET I think it's the logical next step. We know Honda, GM, Hyundai, and others have been selling driving data to insurance companies. But there are some car companies that do seem to respect customer privacy. It doesn't seem to be a big leap for the insurance companies to start going to dashcam makers as another source of telemetry.
A lot of modern dashcams are internet connected. The data is kept on company servers in the cloud. You provide internet access via a wifi connection to your phone. What's the company's official privacy policy regarding your data? Is it published or is it only provided to people who've already purchased the product? I think the more educated the consumers are the more likely we can pressure big companies to do the right thing. The only reason car companies even tried is that they didn't know anyone would find out and the customers never imagined it would happen. |
