Which BMW V8 is the most reliable?

M60/M62/N62/S62? S65? N63/S63?

I have always loved turbos, but there are downsides like less room in the engine bay, more things to go wrong, and the need to use premium gas.

The S65 is pretty reliable if you do the rod bearings and throttle actuators.

100%

The S65 is a pretty reliable engine btw!

I have never had an issue with my throttle actuators and had replaced the Rod Bearings at 125,000 km. The Rod Bearings came out to be in a very good condition considering my driving style and the climate we have in the Middle East.

I am a drifter and my car was a stage 2. I never faced any major issue.

Just make sure you change the engine oil at 5000 km (3000 miles), warm up and cool the car down properly and you'll face 0 issues.

None of BMW V8s are reliable.

M60/2 had timing change and vanos issues.
S62 had vanos and rod bearing issues, sensors like to go.

I've owned the above ones, I think the s65 is more reliable once you do the rb. But it is more expensive to maintain.

Not sure about the newer Turbo V8s.

TTV8s are junk too. First gen N63 spins bearings (and usually cracks the block in the process), eats valve stem seals (like the N62), and use the expensive and problematic pizeo injectors, not to mention with timing chain stretch and all the leaks they have.

N63tu and newer may suffer the same fate. S63s blow up in a similar fashion but you don't hear about it often. I know two people who spun bearings in their F10M's but don't shout from the roof tops about it like the those in 550i's and X5 50i's who expect reliability from their expensive-ish daily driver.

Can pay for rod bearings and do the TA's on an S65 and be relatively free of problems but also be 4k in the hole. Meanwhile, BMW is voluntarily replacing 120k mile N63s for oil consumption out of a lawsuit and new longblocks are only $3k (albeit with waiting list). Not saying one option is better than the other; I'm looking to move into a S65 soon but a E70 50i at the same time would make a nice tow rig/dd if I finessed a new motor for it.

Considering Middle Eastern climate is generally very hot, your car probably saw very little startup wear compared to the RoW. Still nice nonetheless!

Isn't the problem with colder temps and colder oil rather than being on the hot side?

I know a guy who spun a rod at 10,000 km.

The issue was only here in the states because of the fuel quality.

The V8's are nowhere as stout as the I6's, but there are really good ones out there. If the M60 has survived that long, then it's good. S62 is not horrible all things considered and is a good engine.

I personally have an S65 and love it to death. As I said in another thread, the engine could easily sit in something far more exotic and be at home. The great thing is that its related to the V10, but doesn't have the troublesome VANOS issues from that car.

At the end of the day, for what it is, the S65 has to be right up there with one of the best engines BMW has ever produced. To me, it's lower maintenance than the S54, but feels even more special. It's a high strung, high performance engine, so some maintenance is required. It'll never pretend to be a Toyota engine.

No comment on the newer V8TT

In P65 competition spec, it was the most reliable V8 engine in GT racing. What more is there to say?

Don't think S63 engine per se has any issues. There are several members with 100,000+ miles without any engine issues. However N63 is bit different but didn't BMW figure out the problem was related to heat and the infrequent oil changes?
