Strange knocking noise from near side rear

Posting this in the hope that maybe someone has had the same problem and can save me a trip back to the dealer...

So I have a strange knocking noise coming from the near side rear.
Unable to tell if its from the boot or the rear wheel as not able to sit back there whilst testing it!
It's strange as it only happens under acceleration and braking/deceleration, and only a single quite high pitched tinging sound each time. It's like there's a glass bottle rolling around in the boot. If I accelerate, it sounds. If i accelerate again it doesnt. Same with braking. On first brake, it sounds, if I lift and brake again it doesnt... until I accelerate and it sounds again.
So sounds like something rolling between two points and staying there each time. If that makes any sense.

The boot is totally empty apart from charging cable. Deploying my very basic car skills I've waggled most things I can reach underneath and all seems pretty solid.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe drop the seat backs and try again, might help try and pinpoint the location?

Could it be something loose in the compartment where the locking wheel nut key is stored.

ooh. good call. Does sound like a locking wheel nut rattling around.
Is that the compartment that's underneath the storage bin in the near side of the boot? Vaguely recall there being a little plastic flap in the floor.

Unfortunately the missus has disappeared off to work in the car so unable to check.

Thanks for that.

When I picked up my brand new E46 coupe many years ago, the salesman walked me round the car, including showing me the locking wheel nut in the tool tray. He removed the nut to show me and replaced it, but didn't snap it back in the recess in the tray securely. The result was a terrible rattling that was perfectly timed with my music - the parcel shelf speakers made the nut move! It took quite a while to track down too!

That the one. Fingers crossed it solves the problem.

Great. Thanks. If it doesnt, then I think I'll be dragging the family out over the weeked for a long drive with me laying in the boot.

unfortunately not. Locking wheel nut securely stored. And no other tools/items stored in there.

Just had a thought from another thread... the towing eye. Where abouts is that stowed on a 330e? is that supposed to be in the same compartment as the locking wheel nut (under floor on near side storage compartment)? I don't seem to have anything else in there apart from the wheel nut.

There should also be a screwdriver, at least there is in 330i
