this morning i noticed the icons of the traffic lights on some areas of the bmw maps.
is it new or was it already there?

That's been available for a while. I believe you can select it on or off within the configure map menu.

Likewise, here in the UK I've seen that icon for a while. Maybe recently enabled for Italy?

They've been there since 2019 for me in the U.K., and tla doesn't seem to pay any attention to them

Just did an update on my car a few weeks back and just last week I started to notice the stop lights on the map this is in Canada. It would be nice to have the traffic light count down with this!

I have it for a while but not sure since when. It even indicates you drive into a redlight. In case you brake to late a big red light comes up on the screen.

The big red light is part of an unrelated KAFAS system that also identifies stop and give way signs.

It uses the main windscreen camera to detect the traffic light state and if you are travelling too fast towards it will generate the light warning. It doesn't use the navigation traffic light poi's, and is only available in certain countries.
