https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=901686 Although not every upcoming model's release date is listed, except in limited circumstances (M models, for one), the next generation of a BMW model will begin production when the current one ends. Quote:
So, yes, it does take a lot of work to develop a vehicle (typically much more than those not involved in the industry imagine, in fact). However, it does not take seven years. Rather, the timing is based on optimizing the investment in the current product before moving on to the next one. Quote:
Within the 4 Series family, it is only the G26 (which BTW, is explicitly the topic of this thread - the G22 is covered elsewhere) that will not be available until 2021. Quote:

Was with Gran Coupe and i4 earlier.
The design elements such as what you are expecting and key elements as the upward kink and surface work translates beautifully.

@Scott26 Why are the "Gran Coupe" designed as a 5-door Hatchback (Gran Turismo) and not a sleek 4-door coupe like 6GC, 8GC and i4 Concept?
The car would look so much better without the third window row, a longer and normal trunk, and lower roof. This is just disappointing!

So after some time thinking on the design and then doing some serious viewing of every new car design currently available and really paying attention to reviewing cars in the metal in the real world, I still must say I dislike it greatly and am disappointed and sad for the current state of design at bmw overall.
Ive read all the posts in the various threads and have commented as well, but my feelings are that bmw has become very lazy and unoriginal. I saw some of the comments that the designers had their artistic freedom which drove what we say, but its actually the opposite. This design interpretation is stale, its common and nothing special as nearly every other car / sav/ truck from most other car makers have already gone down this path. So we have to ask, why would bmw be so lazy with design to follow a language already used for several years on untold competitor models? Why be so UNoriginal? This is what bothers me most of all as it has more long term implications than just an ugly grille. I truly cant comprehend their lack of originality and uniqueness. So now they have big grilles just like most other new cars, how can anyone say thats artistic freedom, its literally like every manufacturers designers all were in the same stupid design class together and all were taught to do the same exact thing, and then go to different companies and all offer a version of the same crap. Following is never a smart strategy for long term success and this is just a mess. Why bmw why follow everyone else? |

It was also impractical from a packaging perspective especially with the roof line being far lower. However Audi were doing well with their A5 Sportback and focus groups showed that customers would prefer a tailgate to a boot. Since introduction in 2014 the 4er Gran Coupe has performed very well in the market and very much so in the North American market where it outsells both Coupe and Cabrio. Customers like the blend of sportiness found in the design and attributes of the Coupe with the additional practicality.

I was planning to change one of my BMWs to an i4 Gran Coupe, but since its a "Gran Turismo-hatchback", then its not the car for me. Seems like I have to buy an Taycan instead. I just hate the Gran Turismo versions, like the new column stalks that not returning to center anymore. PLEASE give some feedback to your bosses that we want the modern, logical returning column stalks back!!

Well believe it or not the omission of an F36 M4 is considered to be a missed opportunity.

I am telling you now when you see this Gran Coupe G26 people will love it as they will the i4. When you see it free of camouflage and false panels and on the productionised wheels the concept wears. it's actually a striking and modern automobile and yes that includes the kidney grille.

I'm very happy with 540i, and I've been planning getting another one when my lease is up. But, I drove an M340i, which has more range between comfortable and spirited drive than 540i, so M340i made it to my list even though I don't like its design very much... Especially after the introduction of larger grills with 7, X7 and 4 concept, I think 3 and 5 series look.. dated. But M440i can be the ultimate resolution for me Better driving dynamics than my G30, and awesome new grill design...

Still can't believe BMW decided to change the hoffmeister kink to a now vertical kink. Saw the new kink on the 8er Gran Coupe yesterday and was very disappointed when it didn't really flow and follow with the sloping roofline. To the average buyer, they won't even give it a second thought but for everyone else, it's going to be one of those things you wonder why BMW has to change - it truly was a timeless design feature that did not to be changed and could work on any model.

This puts me in a real conundrum.
I love the F36 Gran Coupe and have planned on getting the G26 as soon as it's available. I don't mind the grilles as I think they will look nicer in reality than what we think, and may actually date the previous cars a bit. However, I cannot stand in any way shape or form, the GT. Seeing these photos of the more bulbous appearance of the rear quarters and visually heavy design that seems to blend GT and GC, I think I might pick me up a new hard loaded F36 440GC with heads up, etc. And perhaps add a Dinan tune to get closer to M40i power output, in what I think is a car with far more beautiful lines. We haven't seen the G26 out of camo yet, but it doesn't appear to nearly have the grace and style of the existing car in M-Performance trim. Just my humble opinion. I dislike buying a last model year before a new style, but I like the current bodystyle much better than what I'm seeing. My dealer is working me up a build/looking for a loaded F36 as I type.

I owned an F36 435i Gran Coupe from 2014 when I first saw them come out until about a week ago and switched it up for a 2020 M340xi with M Performance Full Kit.
I can say the F36 was an absolute pleasure to own and the body and look of the car was incredible. I have been a big fan of exotic and luxury cars my whole life and no car got more subtle respect than my 435i. I have owned Audi, Mercedes, Infiniti, BMW and for overall design and driver experience its at the TOP of the ToP for my taste. I am a driver first and a person who understands quality second. The Gran Coupe is a perfect car for someone who loves cars, loves to drive, and has a small family. Just like the 3 Series or 3 Series GT for that matter. I am really looking forward to seeing the 2021 4 Series Gran Coupe I think I will pick one up. |

I recently test drive an m340 but felt it was a bit small on the interior for my needs. Does anyone know if the m440 gran coupe coming out next year (hopefully) will be a middle step size wise between the m340 and m550? Thanks!

Usually the GC version for the car does not have that much more space inside. In fact it might be less space. The GC is meant to be for looks instead of practicality. Full sedans like the 3 and 5 will definitely have more usable space. Too bad you dont have the wagon option!
