I think it's circumstantial - when I got the 235, it was my 6th BMW. My previous two cars had been 135s (one N54, one N55). The car was marketed as a true competitor or follow up to the 1M...and that, it simply wasn't. I liked the older E82s better in almost every aspect.

I can absolutely see why someone new to the brand or RWD would like it - but it was a complete let down for me. I was expecting something much closer to a "real" M, and always felt like the car was nowhere near that.

All my own fault - I bought into the hype and ordered one of the very first cars to be delivered on the forum. Bought it sight unseen and having no test drive. Those are mistakes I haven't and won't make again, because the character of the car was completely inconsistent with my expectations for it. So I got rid of it after about 18 months and got a 981 instead, which exceeded my expectations. It all worked out in the end...I just don't agree how the car was introduced in terms of what the M perf. line was supposed to represent. It's an Audi S line, but from the BMW side. Which is totally fine and good - but that's not what I was expecting when I got it.
This was clearly a replacement to the 135is in my opinion. It was never marketed as a true M car

But it was compared to the 1M on multiple occasions, and one of the M guys said it was faster in certain applications. After owning one (the 235), the only application I could imagine such a reality being true is if the 1M was doing a purposeful drift or burnout.

The 1M, in my opinion, IS a real M car.

The jump wasn't hard to make.

EDIT - and the M2 wasn't confirmed early either...just rumored.

The 135is was a better car too, in my opinion.

Sad to see bmw have ditched the brembo rear caliper on m3/4 for a stock shitter merely painted, just like the m5 and merc/Audi do with their performance models

I guess its perspective. I remember thinking this is as close as we will get to an m2 not the fact that the m235 would be the true successor

Not much of a difference from the F80 except small tweaks, not enough difference for me to get. Will have to skip this generation.

Look at that fat pig playing in the snow. Why are they making these things so big? I want to eventually trade in my F82, but not for something the size of a van. This F82 is big enough already. can we all collectively fat shame the hell out of the G80 until bmw makes it lose some weight?

Look at you. You're disgusting, you fat ugly, f'ing elephant.

Agreed...but the more important problem to me is the physical size, just like you say. Why, must each generation be bigger, even if it happens to be lighter? Makes no sense to me.

Agree... ANd also it will have the same dated interior(judging by the spy pics) and the farting sound of the moden M-cars.

Good news: there will still be available fake engine sound option through the audio speakers. Ohh wait...
