Spotify

Does anyone have a definitive answer as to why some cars have spotify and some don't?

(The spotify idrive app, NOT car play)

I believe it's the iDrive software needing to be updated. You can't update OTA (currently), and depending on when your car was manufactured or last serviced, you may have an iDrive version that doesn't have the app on the vehicle.

I leased a new 2019 330i in July. It was a production order, so it must have come off the line sometime in June.

No Spotify app was on the IDrive system. The BMW dealer's genius told me BMW has discontinued including the Spotify app for safety reasons. They were concerned about hackers getting into the car thru the infotainment system.

That's all I know.

I find that interesting, because other forum members have posted screenshots of running the Spotify App on their new G20's.

That would be discontinuing for security reasons. And I have a hard time believing that's the reason due to BMW easily being able to sandbox any running apps.

BMW Apps (BMW support of third-party apps on your phone like Spotify and Pandora) was eliminated with the iDrive 7. BMW apps may continue with the iDrive 6 in base G-chassis models, depending on hardware installed.

CarPlay is now the way to use third-party apps on your phone in the iDrive screen.

In your country, you can buy supported third-party apps subscriptions like Spotify thru the ConnectedDrive Store. Spotify will become an app in the iDrive and not an app in your phone.

In the USA there is no support yet for ConnectedDrive app subscriptions.

BMWAG itself stated the elimination of BMW Apps with the G20 -BMW Apps is the platform for third-party phone apps- and moving towards a subscription service thru ConnectedDrive. More of a business decision than a "security" concern. A real security concern would be hacking thru the WiFi Hotspot, and pretty much it is standard now.

BMW Genius was a great idea in paper, but they consistently disappoint in real dealer life.

I have iDrive 7 (07/2019.30) and have Spotify without paying for a subscription though.

I would guess that in the UK or your dealer includes the subscription at no cost. It is still a subscription account add-on, somebody is paying for this somehow.

Tell a lie... It's not in BMW Apps it just appears under the media as a media device. It is not phone dependant though.

There is no BMW Apps, only App. Two different features.

I’m trying to find out if once the trial period ends, you need to pay the yearly connected music subscription to access Spotify (I have a Spotify account, but do you need to pay to be able to log in and use BMW data)

BMW Connected UK site now included spotify in the connected music add on. Previously is was just Napter and Deezer. I'm still in my trial period but looks like once this is up it will require re-activating.

Spotify - Whats going on?

Last weekend I was going to pay £60 for the Connected Music app which expired recently but decided to wait, its still in my connected drive shopping cart, however when I added it I am sure the apps text mentioned connected music with included Deezer, Napster and Spotify support. Now Spotify seems to have been deleted from the text.

Oddly enough connected drive would not let me purchase connected music last weekend!!

I subscribe to Spotify and think I can get it via Bluetooth when my phone is in the car but it was much better previously when part of the Idrive and used from the cars sim card.

So do I have any options other than using my phone?

Is your phone an iPhone? If so you can get Spotify thru apple car play with your own account.

If not then apart from what you propose the only other way is to pay BMW if the Spotify option comes back.

I have Spotify as a free trial... thru connected drive.

Yes I can get Spotify via apple car play but that is also subscription based, I have 6 months left and you also need the phone in the car.
