So I had the misfortune of this happen:



I'm likely just going to replace with the same set of tires since there aren't really many options for all-season runflats.

My question is, the speed rating on this tire is H (130 mph). If I replace with the identical tire but with a V speed rating (149 mph), does that cause any issue with either the car or during lease turn in? Somehow the ones with the V rating are cheaper.

Ditch the runflats completely and get yourself a set of high performance all season non runflat.

I would but don't have a spare, so unfortunately need to roll with the runflats.

I swapped out my runflats and bought an inflator kit for the trunk. Less than $100 gets you a decent setup including the sealer goo. It wouldn't help with your run flat sidewall failure but it works fine with most nails etc. and is an oem option for a lot of manufacturers including BMW.

Many don't have a spare and run non runflat. Pickup something like the following to keep in the car.

Yes. On a lease you need to return the car with the same type of tires the car came with.

If the tire you’re replacing with is truly identical to the tire coming off, having a V speed rating shouldn’t be an issue.

No, I don't think so. As long as there's sufficient tread it won't matter.

So I spoke with a friend who used to work at a BMW dealership.... here's my plan of action:

You guys are all bad (good?) influences on me, so I've decided to ditch the runflats for a set of michelin pilot sport A/S 3+ tires. I'll keep the 3 good OEM tires I still have. Upon lease turn-in I'll purchase a used OEM tire (or new if I can't find a used one) and just add that to the original set of 3 (since apparently they don't care about mismatched treadwear on your tires at lease turn-in as long as the tires are the original ones).

Actually yes. My car came with Pirelli P7 AS RFTs which I have taken off. I currently have the Michelin Pilot A/S 3+ non RFTs, but will need to switch back to the RFTs before lease return.
However, if you put on Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, BMW maybe OK with it as they are an option on these cars.

I swapped out my RF's too and upgraded to Michelins PS4S's along with the below tire inflator kit which appears to be exactly as the oem kit just different labelling and higher price if bought from BMW.

I got Michelin PS AS 3+s too and love them. I've stored the Pirelli RFTs for lease turn in.

I had two different sets of Pirelli P7s on my A4 (the rear tyres and front tyres had different speed ratings but were the same brand/size) and they didn't say anything during lease turn in. Can't comment about BMW though but I'm guessing it shouldn't matter.

Perhaps I was lucky, but the last lease I had, they didn't bat an eyelash when I turned the vehicle in with different tires.

I swapped to performance summer tires from usually crappy runflats.

No one said a word.



Edit: That said, I was going from a leased M550i to a paid in cash new M5.

Perhaps they realized it was best not to nitpick when I was going to continue to be a great customer.

Yup I'm following that same strategy! Pretty excited to try the car out on the PS AS3+.

Yeah I've never had a problem with a car being turned in with different brand of tires. Admittedly I don't have experience with BMW however. Audi? Never an issue.

BMW doesn't care about the brand matching but if the vehicle came with RFs then they have to be turned in with run flats.

And there's the rub with BMW. Why the hell they force run flats on people is beyond me.

As3+s just transformed the car for me. Much more comfortable less tire noise and the wet performance is exquisite. With rfts I would experience tire spin with just a little rain since I don't have xdrive. Even though mother nature kept snowing I was very confident with the Michelin's.

On my current car, I had a similar problem with the Pirelli run flats & have replaced with Michelin A/S 3+. These are really super, allowing the car to really handle super!

Your tactic of keeping the OEM & putting them back on when lease is up should work fine, but you may want to check with dealer to see if you even have to do that, BUT get it in writing

I'm very excited to see what the A/S 3+ can do. I thought it already handled well on the Pirelli P7's, although I did hit the limits pretty quickly on those, so the A/S 3+ should feel amazing.

Not necessarily. If your car was equipped with RFTs, at lease turn in, you must have RFTs on the car or you will be charged. The inspection form is specific on the tires.

Don't expect a HUGE difference. Looks like we may have spoiled it for you. Hehe.

The 3+s are really good tyres. Grip is so much better (my 330i always kicked it's rear out when I took turns enthusiastically). No more with the 3+s. It grips like there is no tomorrow. Ride comfort is good. I didn't notice a huge improvement but then, the base suspension is very good when it comes to ride quality. My only worry is what I'll do when I get a flat. I haven't bought a mobility kit yet but I should.
