That pretty much does it for me. If there is no mod for this based off what is stated that the new ecu cannot be cracked, its either a 2020 or something else.
Other than the new styling of the 340i, the exhaust sound sold me and also adding a Mperformance exhaust.

here is a good side by side comparison of MY 2020 und 2021

now you have the same bullshit we have in europe since MY 2019/09

Picked up my MY21 M340i xdrive with the MPE and can confirm no pops so far with only 200 miles on it. It does burble though when coming off throttle in sport plus mode. Coming from a Veloster N which had the pops this feels a little more mature. The exhaust note on the m340i with MPE is much deeper, throatier, and louder than the 4 banger on the veloster N.

Does the US 2021 M340i perhaps also come with OPFs now? European models with OPFs also onlymburble a bit now, but pops and bangs are gone...

Hmmm may need to get the M Perf. exhaust then.

It's tuning, not OPF related...

The difference in startup sounds suggest more than just ECU tuning for the exhaust note change. At the very least the exhaust flap sounds closed, but even then the volume level when revving sounds a bit different. Did they also add a resonator or put in a different muffler? RealOEM isn't updated for MY21 yet, but will be interesting to see when it is.

Also makes me consider upgrading to an M3 more as people might want my more tunable MY20 if I do.

Yes I am. I am trying to decide if I want to pay 115k for a new one or I may wait until May of next year and get a CPO 19 model. I have never bought a new BMW and always purchased CPO cars. Next year they will be about 75 to 80k and I also like the dash layout better. Coming from owning five 7 series, the M5 has all the amenities. There is still the G80 but the controversy is with grill is killing me and I actually like the car.

I think it is at least since 2019/11 more probably start from 2019/12

I compared the MY20 to the MY21 parts components.
Every part is the same, its the ECU that's controlling the burble/pops.
Same cat, same front pipe, same exhaust muffler.

it is 100% only the dme! bmw changed the sounddesign and set all burbles to off!
i switched it back with mhd burble mode.
there is no hardware limitation.
