Long story short: a buddy of mine hit a curb driving my car while we were on a road trip. Slow speeds in a small town, but still enough to scuff the wheel. It's a 793 19" wheel with "BMW Individual" etched on it. Now, I could get it resurfaced, but every place I've talked to said I will lose that etching on it. The other option would be to get a new rim, which is about $900-1000.
I reached out to BMW North America and they were able to get a local dealer to get the cost down to about $400-450 for a new rim. Still seems high IMHO, but then again it's a BMW. My friend is willing to pay for the rim, but frankly I think this could throw a wrench in our friendship, so I'm a little torn here. Based on the pictures below and the story, what would you all do? Resurface it, replace it, try an over the counter repair kit (which, BTW, anyone have anything recommendations for that?), or just live with it? All suggestions welcome. :-) EDIT: My car is leased and I have 2 more years left on it.

No cheap repair kits. It's always going to be noticeable especially to you, who knows about it. Replace it or live with it. $450 seems very fair for a new wheel. I don't think that amount of money should be an issue considering you trusted your friend with your car...

Appreciate the feedback thus far! I should add - my car is leased and there's 2 years left on the lease. At this point, I'm 95% sure I'm going to get another BMW at the end of it.

Or you could try a DIY first if you're willing to buy a new rim? If it becomes worse, you can junk the rim since you're getting a new one. If it becomes better and is acceptable to you, you can save the $450.
I wouldn't jeopardize friendship over a curbed wheel. Lots of DIY videos on YouTube.

I would make him pay for it and make sure you factor in the wheel install cost too. Anytime someone borrows something from someone else it's implied that they are responsible for it, if you lose a friend over that, then count your blessings bc that person was never your friend.

I would just get it repaired .... there is no way they are going to pick up that "BMW Individual" etching is missing. Also, if you are going to lease another car after this, I am sure they will look the other way.
As someone said, if I borrowed your car and curbed a wheel, I would get it replaced or repaired whatever you prefer with no questions.

You can repair that or ignore it. There's no reason to replace the wheel for a cosmetic curb burn. I would NOT make my friend buy a new wheel. It's bound to happen.
It's a new car. It's going to get chips, dings, and scratches. Just happens. Fixing every minor cosmetic imperfection when they happen is a waste of money. Unless you have OCD you can't control and it's actually affecting your health... |

I have the same wheels and today I misjudged a curved section of curb and scraped one of them while parking. Did you end up repairing or replacing the wheel? Id just live with it but its a lease and I assume theyll ding me for it in 2.5 years when its up.

Most dealerships have "on-site" wheel repair companies or a business relationship with a company to address issues like this whether it be for customer pay issues or reconditioning of wheels for vehicles that come in on trade. We use a company called "Wheels on Site."
I have a 2020 M340 Xi and have had mine refinished due to a construction mishap on the streets of Baltimore. As Service Director for Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, McLaren, I have many customers who have scuffed wheels and have not had any complaints. They are able to refinish all types of finishes; Powder Coated, Diamond Cut, Two-Tone, etc., and also straighten wheels, as well as color change. Although some companies are better than others, my suggestion is to ask your dealer if they offer this service and if not, based upon your area, I have reviewed the following company https://arswheelrepair.com who works a lot like the company I use. Good luck! |
