That picture and this announcement almost made me delete my account and never read news on any new BMW's ever again.
That design... "M50i"... I feel like I've been stuck in bizarro-world the past few years and this release is the announcement that the world will never go back to normal. |

A few years ago BMW stopped to name their cars after the engine displacement and opted to choose "comparable power output and performance".
So this is where it start's the get weird. An i440 therefor should be closer to a 440i - which doesn't exist. I believe they are still not sure on how to position the i4 in the market and how to market these cars. But it's not hard to imagine that there will be a RWD version mit the electric engine of the iX3 (so 286 hp - 210 kW). In certain magazines BMW seems to communicate the production start of the i4 and 4 Series GC quite offensive. https://www.automobil-produktion.de/...mitte-376.html https://www.automobil-industrie.voge...gung-a-974943/ Last edited by cisweisswurschtequatori; 11-30-2020 at 02:37 PM.. |

I'm really looking forward to more manufacturers getting into the EV market properly. Thanks very much for posting this.

I'm actually excited for this.
After seeing what Porsche could do with the Taycan then I imagine BMW can make something pretty exciting to drive. Won't be at the Taycan's level but if comparable to the 3 series then I would be happy. If not then there is always the normal 3 series that will still be around. |

An i3 starts at $44,495 with a 42kwh battery. Estimation is 1 kwh costs ~ $150. Start with a ~80kwh (+$6,000), + a bigger car than the i3 (+$5,000). Caveat, I don't know the difference in construction material, Carbon, so this is really an educated and hopeful guess.
My guess is the base i4 starts around $54,995. Other data points Tesla 3 $38k Gas powered US 3 series starts at $41 add a 80kwh battery +$12k gets you to $53. Round down or up $49k to $55k....I hope for $49k but BMW has never wowed me with an MSRP. I also want them to sell more than ~6,500, which is the number of e-trons Audi will sell in 2020. i4 M50, i440.. if this should have any logic, it should be i4 M50, i4 xDrive40/sDrive40 or something. Why cant BMW just do it simple, and in classic BMW style? 440i (gasoline) 440d (diesel) 440e (electric - todays "i4 / i440") 440ie (gasoline+electric) 440de (diesel+electric) 440h (hydrogen) Simple and clean..

So what's the deal with gasoline engines future? Are they going to scrap them completely or just still offer them along side electric cars, and for M cars will it be the same thing ?

I'm excited to see if BMW can bring it all together. Will likely the first generation or models pass and jump on the second iterations. There's still that in-between that isn't being occupied by a manufacturer - Tesla is on the "lower end" - has the range but overall quality is quite terrible and Porsche has the upper end with the Taycan. I'm hoping BMW can provide a solid middle ground between the two.

I cant help feeling like it would be easier if they gave the new 4 electric series version names like hmm
i440 regular i version M440i Performance version of the i M4i or maybe i4M for the full blown M version of this model. Still though BMW for the love of whatever is holy to you the naming schemes needs to get better this is so weird as it is now.

BTW I see no hints of a proper M car derived from the i4 anywhere. The camoed mule with the M mirrors is as much of a mystery to me as it is to all of you. At this point, either I'm missing something major or that will be the first time special mirrors go on an M Performance model.

M50 for an electric car...Seriously ? Are they going to add "Twin Scroll Turbo" on the engine cover? This is going to looks like Porsche with their non sens electric Taycan Turbo... I think the marketing people have no idea how a turbo works
