To be fair it still burbles and pops just not as much. It no longer does it just when lifting off the throttle and the transmission shifts more readily to higher gears than it used to. Still, I liked that character of the car and wish it wasn't taken away.

Every damn year the g20 has had different performance and exhaust note and each one has different benefits! Wtf kind of bs is this? First batch g20s have louder/deeper exhaust note, faster and more burbles pops if they didn't update and they have the "simple cluster feature"... every g20 that has come out afterwards has had less excitement to it.

I think if it gets annoying to me I will get a downpipe and a set of aftermarket pipes and it should be decent for me. I don't need the 20MY pops and all that but we will see how much they detune it before it finally breaks me.

Vmaxx you are making my point exactly. WTH are these people at BMW d o i n g? Leave my car alone, I don't need to be connected to you in order to have you detune my car. Thanks but no thanks.

Just an update: my service adviser who I consider to be a friend said they did not update the software in my car when it was in. He also made the distinction that updates for the powertrain and ones that add things like the steering wheel climate rule are different. I'm not sure what to say, it's not my imagination, a car that I drive in Sport+ probably 60% of the time for a year now grabs higher gears and doesn't have lift-off pops certainly had something changed. I am getting used to the way it is now but I do miss the lift-off pops.

Genuine question. It's the same car right? It's just a computer tune. So if you want a certain characteristic, just pay to tune it to the characteristics you want?
Cracks and burbles are at least not really critically functional so long as you're able to maintain boost right? |

But we're not even sure at this point that an exhaust will even add those characteristics back. We'll have to hear some 21's with new exhaust but my guess is that they wont bring any pops or burbles back without some sort of software tune/adjustment

I haven't driven it enough to know whether I am going to get an MPE or Dinan, but I use mine as a DD so it doesn't need to be THAT loud anyway. I came from a F series 330i so it already sounds more aggressive than that did.

That said, these are largely just cosmetic sounds. If you like your car to 'sound' fast, I think there are much cheaper and more bespoke options. But also, it's a taste thing so I don't want to rag on those who care. But I think that's also why it's not that big of a deal to most BMW customers and why BMW is not taking more flak for this.

Let's just say that this happens more often then people like to think it does. Imagine that instead of just pops/burbles that your cars performance was reduced? I can't specifically speak about the instance as I signed an NDA with BMW regarding one of my previous cars but these kind of things happen. |

I did one update and that definitely made some changes I didn't like from sound, to shifting points, to neutral rev speed. I have mpe and I noticed the sound changes. I have a new update sitting for over a months and I won't do it ever again.
Stay on the earliest version if you like your car as aggressive as it can be |

The latter would be great but don't think that is true too often - not at a dealer at least.

I've had the 11/2020 update for about a week now coming from the 07/2019 update. There is definitely a difference in the exhaust tune now. At first I thought it was my imagination, but I take the same damned trip to work every day on the same roads at the same speeds in the same mode. Pops and burbles are greatly reduced!
