G20 Windscreen Scratch

I have noticed a curved scratch on my G20 windscreen in an arc all the way across the passenger side of the screen. It looks as though a piece of grit got caught under the windscreen wiper blade.

I have so far been unable to remove it with polish.

Does anyone have any experience of dealing with this kind of issue?

The exact same thing happened my new 330e. In fact my entire windscreen has light scratches. I can’t understand how the glass could scratch so easily. I keep my car spotlessly clean.

I went back to the dealer and they told me it had nothing to do with the wipers. I still wasn’t happy and in the end the aftersales manager has agreed to replace the windscreen – it’s going in this Thursday.

The dealer sent me the quote for €1,200 but they will do it for €300 and I can claim this back from my insurance company.

Overall, I’m delighted with my garage – this is the first brand new car that I have purchased. I can’t believe how crap the windscreen is. Surely not fit for purpose if you can’t use your wipers.

All BMW's have softer glass than they used to. It may be to damaged to repair. Glass coverage? Might need to replace

I think all brands do. I've had similar scratches on Lexus, Audi, Mazda, Volkswagen, etc.

You can try Ceri glass (chromium oxide) and a glass polishing pad such as a Reylon pad if you haven't as yet.

Yes, I have a curved scratch on my drivers side windscreen presumably caused by a piece of grit in the wiper blade. A bit annoying under some driving sunlit conditions.
I have been driving nearly every day for many years and never had this happen before.
It could be related to the way the windscreen washers work. It seems that the fluid collects in the scoops which are underneath the rubber blade so the blade moves across the windscreen in advance of the water.
Good for high speed motoring bombing down the motorway, but........!
No good for cleaning the screen before the blade!

Further to my above post I have another curved scratch on the passenger side of the windscreen, again only seen in certain sunlit conditions. Annoying! I was bombing down to Rochester at the time, it started to rain, I put the wipers on, the rain stopped and there was the scratch.
Then, on the way back from Rochester I had a warning message to say that my oil level was low and I must immediately top up with 1 litre of oil. Nice!
Still had some miles to go but anyway I pulled into my local BMW Main Dealer.
Oil: I litre bottle £15.00
1 litre bottle x 2 = £24.00 Bought.
When unscrewing the engine oil filler cap, vapours issued forth! Cannot recall seeing this before but this engine seems to run at 100 Deg Centigrade and above.

Wipers: BMW Main Dealer £63.50 the pair. Bought
Halfords £56.00 the pair
I decided to go for the BMW set, for is it worth spoiling the ship for a ‘haporth of tar? As they say!

For fitting I followed the graphic instructions on the carton.
To remove, squeeze the clip and pull the blade clear. Easy!
For fitting, slide the wiper in and click, its on.
It wasn’t, and after a few times of trying and looking carefully at the pivot housing it was obvious that you had to squeeze the clip before it clicked on.

All in all not a good day!

Unfortunately have binned the carton for the wipers which would have had the part number and haven’t as yet received receipt for the items as they said they would email to me.
Will advise as soon as receipt received.

In my 320i oil temperature normally settles at around 108 C after 10/15 minutes of driving.

I am suspicious the glass is thinner/softer than before. In the first 2 months of ownership, I've had 2 cracks and one replacement windscreen

They are laminated so they are prone to chips and scratches more easily vs older windshields. It doesn't help that there are more and more trucks/SUV on the road that are shooting out road debris.

I have just polished mine out over the weekend with a da polisher and ceriglass.
At last all the scratches have gone.
Don’t expect them to come out with a few passes though, it taken me around 6 hours as you have to let the screen cool when it starts to get hot.

I've also got two parallel arc scratches passenger side. Again, never had this before in 30 years of car ownership. They feel quite deep so I'd imagine I can get it replaced on a windscreen excess as it may be more prone to cracking now. If I do, hopefully the Autoglass replacement is tougher

Does the G20 need a special windscreen if you have a HUD? I know my E60 did, and I had to stop Autoglass from installing a standard glass replacement.

Had this on my F10 and on my G30, so soft... on the F10 I used a drill polisher, and it looked horrible (you have to be so controlled, or is leaves a permanent blemish, swirl)

G30 has so many flecks and mess, very few motorway miles.... and the wipers often leave an arc... I've found the best is to stop immediately and wipe the wiper... get it soon... so far so good

Got fed up with my scratches. Luckily my insurance company have authorised a replacement screen due to the scratches. It's 50/50 apparently if they cover scratches, my insurer does. Getting it done next week.

Crazy the amount of windscreens having to be replaced on new cars. I'm afraid to use my wipers after getting my new replacement windscreen. My insurance paid 300 euro and the dealer covered the rest. The total was €1,200 euro.

In Europe they've been laminated for about the last twenty years so it isn't that.

Don't know about Canada - can you still get cars with toughened as opposed to laminated?
