Just turned 65 retired Engineer. This is my second BMW coming from a 2010 528xi which I had for 11 years and it was a great car even tracked it a few times. Unless I change my mind in thee years or so planning on getting a G80 M3 Competition AWD. Too bad I could not afford these cars when I was much younger, butt better late than never. I did owned a used 1968 Charger 426 Hemi when I was 18.

I got sales-pressured into leasing a mazda 6 once, only lease I ever did, regretted it as soon as I drove it off the lot. I hated my decision so much I paid the difference to get out of the lease. (never do that again lol). Maybe when I'm more well-established in profession/career I could upgrade cars more frequently and lease/rent, but just for me personally, can't shake the idea of renting a car I'll have to turn back in like "this isn't really mine". To each their own!! enjoy man and congrats!!
Thanks, and totally agree with you!! I was the guy leasing to get into a new car every few years. Found a ton of resources and research on how to set up a great lease deal with no money down and a great payment structure. All because I couldn't make up my mind to commit to a particular car as a long-term purchase lol. It was the mile restrictions that inevitably got to me by the end of each lease and just couldn't do it anymore. Thank the car gods for the M340 haha

Car prices in Portugal are insane. Probably some of the most expensive in Europe, because of high taxes. That’s why we have one of the oldest car “fleets” in Europe.

I think most people here don’t buy new cars. Some import used cars with a few years on them from Germany and other EU countries, others buy second hand company cars, cars from rent-a-car companies, service cars from dealers, etc.

I’m very privileged to be able to afford a car like my 330e, but I also feel I need to take care of him to make it last, because it makes no financial sense for me to be swapping cars every few years, considering our income in Portugal, and the high prices of cars.

Yeah we're a bit spoiled here in the US with cars and gasoline as well, but we still like to complain about stuff anyway. LOL.

As for cheap prices in NA, our Canadian friends might have something to say about that. While they may not be as expensive as European countries, still a bit more than the US I think.
In India, a 330i M sport costs the equivalent of US$80K or more. They haven't launched the M340i there yet but that will be around $100k when they do, next month.
Also, one cannot build a BMW with options like in the US/Europe. There are very few packages available and not a lot of options are standard there.

The base M340i in Portugal, with no extras, costs 82.100€, the equivalent to 99.500 USD. Most 3 series on the road here are 318d and 320d.

Because of the high taxes, most cars have underpowered engines unfortunately. My previous car (first car I haver owned), was a Fiat Punto with a 1.2L 69hp engine. These kinds of cars are pretty standard here, Puntos, Clios, Fiestas, etc. with 70-90 hp.

It's the same in India when it comes to the car scene. Smaller cars are very common. And guess what. We also have a Fiat Punto in India! Though with a 1.3l diesel 75hp. Shares garage with a VW Polo sedan (Vento) and Jetta (all diesels).

The G20 320d is common in India compared to the 330i. That also costs around US$70-75k. Cars are expensive there because if the same reason you mentioned. High taxes.

I've always heard that Singapore is the most expensive place to own a car. They tack on like 300% tax pretty much in order to dissuade people from buying cars. I kind of understand it considering they're basically a small island.

50. Feel 25 most days, 75 some days. Lol. Could never afford these cars as a young man without seriously getting in over my head financially. Wondering what the next step up is for a kid in their 20's who has an m340i now....

Here's my progression...Most of these were the most bang for the buck purchase at the time, and fun to drive.

(On order) M340i Xdrive
Audi S4 (factory order)
Audi A5 (factory order)
Mk 6 GTi
Mk 4 GTi
2002 Mustang GT (a post 9/11, let's get the economy going, pity purchase)
Jetta GLX
Jetta 2.Slow

I’m thrilled to not yet be in the oldest age bracket.

I have yet to see another ‘21 G22 on the road since I bought mine 2 months ago. Even had a few long road trips to look.

Driving the M340xi makes me feel younger. Especially with the MPE exhaust.

37, M340 owner. Love the car. Still fully plan on trying to convince my wife an upgrade to the M3 will be necessary once the x-drive version is released. We'll see

Wow I thought Switzerland was bad with a starting price around 80k CHF/88k USD. Granted salaries are really good but cars are relatively expensive

Ha, that's nothing. As I said the other day, Singapore is probably by far the most expensive place in the world. I just checked at a dealership there and they want $326,000 Singapore Dollars for an M340i xDrive which is equivalent to about $245,000 US!! INSANE!
