If you are not tracking vehicle, 5W30 would be excellent choice.
what if i'm tracking? is 5W30 fine as well?

I personally would go 40.
But, which 5W30 is more important?

Why is 5W40 better for tracking

Higher HTHS, which is basically, in simple terms, viscosity under pressure at 150c.
40 is, well, thicker, and with that, maintains pressure better.

some questions edycol.

in another topic you said:

Quote:
You want HTHS in 3.5-4cp range (on track possibly minimum 3.6). With that HTHS you want as low as possible KV100. Hypothetically, KV100 14.2 and HTHS 3.7 are average values. KV100 13.1 and HTHS 3.7 are really good values.
so a good oil today for our bimmers should have:

bmw ll01 or bmw ll04 approval
lower KV100
high HTHS between 3.5 minimum to 3.9 to 4 max
noack as low as it can be , max 10%,ideal between 5-8%
mb. 229.5 or mb. 229.51-2 most stringent approval
porsche A40 or porsche C30 or porsche C40

ideally
low pour point under 45 degrees , indicator of good base stocks

if you track the car then a hths of 3.6 to 4
if not track the car 3.5 to 3.6 is good enough.

am i right?

as for me , i don't track the car, but i do a spiritual driving,i do a lot of short commute as we discussed in another topic, fuel dilution is there,my engine gets hot,its direct injection with a lot of problems ,especially injectors.

considering all these factors and demands and rules and specifications etc.

you said that mobil 1 esp 5-30, bmw tpt 5-30 ll04-ll01 , and castrol 0-30 both ll01-ll04 are the best choices, driven there by hths and not by grade, grade is indicator of what oil brand viscosity we are talking about

i think mobil is 3.5 hths, bmw tpt 5-30 ll01-ll04 is 3.6 and castrol 0-30 is 3.8.right?
mobil has porsche approval too ,castrol just mb. 229xx

i just don't know anything about noack of these 3. new mobil 1,bmw tpt ll01,ll04 and castrol 0-30 both ll01-ll04.do you have the numbers for these 3?

and second question about pressure.what if use 1 of these oils and my mechanic founds out that these oils can't keep the pressure .i go to higher viscosity,40 grade but how musch hths to choose considering the way i drive, and the short commute ? is 3.6 -3.7 enough or i need to use a thicker oil since as you claim thicker oil is by hths and not by grade only.
and which oil could that be for example?

thanks for your answer.

New Mobil1 5W30 ESP is API SP and has BMW LL04. I think that oil right now might be perfect for B48 engines.
Pressure? That is all HTHS. HTHS is basically measured using methodology that is used to determine coold cranking pumpability or W rating, just at 150c. It is MUCH better indicator than grade.
Castrol 0W30: 3.58cP.
Mobil1 0W40: 3.6cP
PPE 5W40: 3.88cP.
Motul X-Clean 5W40: 3.8cP

Yes, your car gets hot. It is designed to get hot. It improves efficiency and performance. But spirited driving is nothing. It is actually good preventive habit. Short trips, city commute will do more harm on engine than spirited driving or track even. As soon as oil temperature is high enough (165f or higher) I am in redline!
Here is UOA of Castrol 0W30 (right column). It was used in winter, 1-2 times a week going to ski resorts. Cold starts as low as -30f sometimes.
Right column is Castrol Edge 0W40. Driven in summer, around 500mls of track time, above 100f temperature at 5,100ft altitude. Some sessions were 60min long:

When it was SOPUS supplied TPT, it was remarkably 6.2%.
I would say, bet on 10%.

No warranty: any LL04 or LL01.
In Wal Mart you have Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30. Change every 5 k.
Motul X-Clean+ 5W30 is super choice but available online!

LL01 is so called Full SAPS oil. Currently I would go Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 (local Auto Zone could have deal) or Motul X-Cess 5W40 GEN2. But ANY approved LL01 will do it.
edycol... Why the different suggestions based on warranty. I have a new m340i but I would like to put better oil in it than 0w20. I could care less about the free 3 oil changes I'll get with BMW over the next 3 years and will do them all on my own. Would you suggest that I just start using 5w30 Pennzoil Euro?

With warranty in mind, I would stick to BMW recommendations. I think somewhere in manual option is LL01FE. It really doesn’t make sense what they recommend as LL17FE is low-SAPS oil and LL01FE high-SAPS oil, but that is BMW and their recommendations for you.
Outside warranty, you can absolutely use LL04. Mobil1 ESP 5W30 has again LL04 and is very stout. New Motul EFE 0W30 is also LL04, and so far I like the way that oil looks the most.

Up to 40K miles I stuck to to OEM BMW 0W-30, never had any burning issues, (Even after a track day running at 90+ degree weather) always was full at oil change intervals. Switched to Liquimoly 5W-40 Leightlauf as recommended by many people especially running Stage 2 and E85 blend occasionally and for the first time I've had to top up about a quart. I've driven about 5-6K on this oil and have noticed significant oil consumption and it dropping from full. Not sure what happened as it's significantly thicker then 0W-30 if someone can explain to me. I will be switching back to 0W-30 next oil change. Reference back you will see many posts throughout the forums of how 0W-30 has never given me a issue.

Just my 2 cents here.. I purchased my 23 last December and changed the oil that February or March at 1200 or 1500 miles. I went with castrol (European) LL17 approved and all that good stuff. I got the oil service notification a few weeks ago. I'm going with valvoline this time around. I could care less about the free oil changes from the stealership. No one is going to treat your car like you would.

edycol, what are your thoughts on Amsoil? I've always been a fan of using their 0 weight oils and received great UOA results in previous engines I've owned. I prefer to sticking to factory weight but it seems my choices are limited with Amsoil, especially if I stick with 0 weight. Engines that require LL-01/04 approvals are a bit new to me. Do you recommend anything from Amsoil that's equivalent to Motul EFE 0w30?

Hey,
AEL always looked good for LL04.
EOT is for LL01. Take into consideration none is approved by BMW. Motul is.
I think both are very stout. Amsoil always had good products. The question is whether they can justify price? I don’t think so, as other blenders have also very good oils. Also, we get here into that issue of blender not having approvals (AEL has VW504.00/507.00) and advertising as “meets or exceeds.”

Amsoil's rates are on the higher end so it's a bit surprising some of their products don't have manufacturer approvals. I can definitely get better deals with Motul.

Motul has their "Specific BMW LL-01FE" in 0w30 but I haven't been able to locate the data sheet. Do you or anyone here have experience with this line? I'm curious to see how it stacks up against their X-Clean+ EFE 0w30 - https://shopmotul.com/product/specific-ll-01-fe-0w-30

I'm using Motul Specific 5W-30 LL-01 FE. I don't think they had the 0W-30 when I filled last (8 months ago). I plan on doing a Blackstone test and I'll post the results. This has had a couple track days on it; zero consumption so far, but under 5,000 miles.

So, from what you are saying, it looks like the 6cyl uses the same oil as the B58 4 Cyl in my 2023 G21.

Hey guys, I've read & re-read this thread several times. I have a 2021 M340i xDrive (in the US)

I've purchased it CPO and have extended warranty till late 2025. Currently the car has about 2000 miles and the oil change indicator notification has come on. I want to change my own oil, don't want the dealer touching it if possible.

Special shoutout to edycol for the wealth of knowledge. Few questions below:
  • Is this car without GPF? It was delivered to the US, so I'm assuming no GPF. Using https://www.mdecoder.com/ doesn't tell me anything about GPF.
  • My owners manual says to use Longlife-01 FE, Longlife-14 FE+, or Longlife-17 FE+ with viscosity grades 0W-20 or 0W-30. The hood however says to use 0W-20.
  • Should I stick with 0W-20, since it's under warranty? I plan to keep the car past warranty (but you never know!)
  • I'm stuck in analysis paralysis. Should I stick with a warranty acceptable oil or something else? Can you offer suggestions for both? I don't track the car so 5W-40 is likely not needed. I want to get the best possible quality oil I can buy. Buying online is no problem.

Thank you!

cleanflow just use a 0W-20 or 0W-30 oil with the correct BMW cert. Your manual specifically says both weights are fine. I've heard anecdotally that even dealers have used 0W-30, but who knows. Not sure how a dealer would evaluate your oil weight if there was an issue; hell, they could give you a headache for not allowing BMW to change it.
