Meanwhile in Ireland I got my renewal from Aviva 21 G20 330D MSport gone up from €418 last year to €509 this year (comprehensive with fully protected no claims)

Tried a couple of others today but none close e.g AIG €880 odd, RSA about €600.

I'll ring Aviva as I want to reduce the value but it probably wont make a huge difference.

Mine renews with Aviva in just over a month. I received an email from them this morning titled "Information about your motor renewal price". So I made myself a cup of tea, took a deep breath, and sat down to read the body of the email and see how bad it was.

There was no data - they were just explaining to me how to interpret the price comparison with current year when it comes "in the next few days", because I made a change in the year (from an M340i to an M340i).

They've never had to prepare me for the shock before - now I really AM worried.

Need to hold my nerve and wait until 3 weeks before renewal which is apparently the best time to shop around!

I'm moving back to Aviva from Admiral next week. Aviva were the cheapest for me by far (G21 M340i with a few cosmetic mods). I was about £440 but then I'm an old git, never made a claim in about 35 years and live in Scotland.

I first checked prices at the earliest possible time, 30 days out. From about 21 days out the quotes do seem to increase. I never had my renewal quote from Admiral until about 18/19 days out. I do wonder if this was a ploy as quotes at that time were higher than the 30 day ones.

My advice - get your quotes 30 days out and save them - my first Aviva one was still valid.

Check all comparison sites too, as the quotes do differ. Think Moneysupermarket had the cheapest Aviva quote for me, and yet our Mini was cheapest with Churchill through Confused.com.

Speaking with a Churchill rep, they freely admitted they have an arrangement with Confused and said most insurers have similar 'arrangements'.

I 100% agree. Get your quotes as early as you possibly can as I found the same thing. The closer to your renewal data, the higher the quotes became.

My renewal is due on the 31st of December and I has expected to have received my quote from my insurrer by now. but nothing yet. though it is only the 2nd of course.

I too am wondering if this is ploy to try to reduce the chance of finding a better quote before the current policy expires.

The best time to get a quote is around 20 days before renewal, there’s quite a lot of analysis kicking around on it.
Insurers exploit those who are overly risk averse along with those who don't plan ahead.

Going from the many, many quotes I generated while looking for a new car over a 9 month period, I really did find that the earlier the better. Your mileage may vary.

Unless of course the renewal quote you receive is 'the best they can offer' and not negotiable as happens with my renewal quotes from my broker acting on the insurers' figures to them.

My insurance isn't up for renewal yet, but out of curiosity I thought I'd have a look what I'd have to pay on the comparison websites. What did strike me was that, even though I stated no courtesy car, all the quotes showed a courtesy car as standard. We know that one of the reasons insurance companies have upped their prices is apparently due to " the increased cost of longer courtesy car loan periods".

Has anyone recently managed to get insurance that doesn't include a courtesy car, and if so did they also see a big hike in the price? I'm currently with Aviva without the courtesy car option, I'll be interested to see if I still have that choice at renewal time.

Insurance madness

I was with Tesco Bank Car Insurance. Last year I paid £773 for the M340i. This year they wanted £1440 !!!! How can they justify that?!

So I shopped around and now have paid only £634 with Aviva for 2024. My insurance runs out on Dec 29th, so getting quotes around 3 weeks before does help!

Just received my renewal price for my car insurance, which renews on 4th January with Aviva. M340i Touring (LCI), with low annual mileage, 64 year old driving, can't remember my last claim (30 years ago ?).

Current year was £482
Renewal price is £664 (+38%)

It's not great but it's not too bad a starting point I suppose, given some of the numbers I'm seeing on here, and considering I've got a Bradford postcode, where insurance cover is often seen as an "optional extra" ...

I just got my renewal quote in. The £403 is not what I paid this year, but what they estimated it would be just 3 months ago when i changed my car. I have been unable to find a better quote w/o increasing my total excess from £330 And that's with my protected NCD as well!!

I do have to note though, that I have had a minor bump in the car since they gave me that estimate, and that minor bump cost £4,600 to repair.

Wow!...I think that's the worst one yet so far on here?
My total excess is £500 not that it's going to help your situation I suspect.

My current excess is £330 Compulsory, £0 Voluntary, but still... I can't save much by increasing it to say £500 total.

My incident has cost me dearly in insurance premiums, as I suspected it would. Grrrr!

And yes, I think it is the worst posted here so far. Double Grrr! EDIT:- Even my first car cost less to insure in 1993, that was £900 and the premiums have always went down (pretty much) from there, but £1200 WTF!! (Sorry about the rant!!)

Was paying £800 last year. My renewal is on 3rd January and my renewal from RAC is £1600

Thought I was seeing things when I read it after I woke up. Absolutely crazy indeed!

Spent most of tonight searching for insurance but it all seems to be pointing towards at least £1100 to insure a 2021 320i Msport and I am 40 with zero points or claims.

It comes down a bit towards £900 if I pay it annually but I don't have £900 sitting in my pocket.

If you can trust yourself to pay the monthly amount as a minimum, , apply for (and stick it on) a 0% credit card.

My credit card is set up so that whatever the balance is at the next billing date, that amount is paid from my debit account. Kind of works like 1 months 0% credit every month. It's handy sometimes..

I wonder whether the massive price hikes are going to result in a load more people driving round uninsured?

More than likely. That'll probably be the excuse they give for next year's massive hike in prices.

I managed to get my renewal significantly cheaper via Hastings Direct (~£870) but noticed the value of the car was stated as £31k which they say was set by the price comparison site I was using. Increasing this to £35k resulted in a £30 refund.

Also worth noting that when I rang Admiral to cancel the automatic renewal (over £1300) they asked a couple of questions and magically dropped the price by £500. Too late, the damage was done because they'd tried to fleece me on the auto renewal and the trust is gone.

Lessons I've learnt:
1. Ignore any auto renewal and call them (helps to have cheaper quotes)
2. Carefully check the information on the policy which may have been defaulted by an intermediary
3. Be polite but firm and prepared to follow through on threats to cancel.

All obvious, I know, but last year it was very much a case of that's the price, take it or leave it whereas this year both Admiral and Hastings have been much more flexible once I've managed to speak to someone.

So some good news on the insurance front. When I renewed my 2020 330i in July, my renewal price was £1300 which I managed to get discounted to £1100. Now bear in mind, the previous year it was £650, so it had more than doubled in 12 months.

Well I received notification that my new M340i touring would arrive on the 13th, so I contacted Admiral who I am with, and I was pleasantly shocked to be quoted £850!!! £450 cheaper than a 3 year old 330i, work that one out??

Even better news was they gave me £750 rebate when I cancelled my existing insurance, so it's all worked out really well.

Have insurance prices come down since the peak of the summer or have I just got lucky?

I've been unable to find a bettter quote than the £1200 I posted a few days ago., from my current insurer. Direct Line wanted £2k and Hastings Direct wouldn't even give me quote at all FFS! Really?

You must be a dodgy risk mate!!!

Sorry Tok'Ra....couldn't resist!

Karma will probably bite me on the arse next year at my renewal mind you especially since the 'low life' who clattered my door mirror back in August is still refusing to accept any blame and I'm anticipating a meteoric rise in my premium!
