Unique BMW M Standalone Model Under Consideration

Per Autoblog:

Almost ever since the BMW M1 went out of production in 1981, fans have had one question: When will the M division produce such a beast again? Not merely a scorching take on a BMW, but a standalone model of extraordinary capability. Thirty-eight years later, the question still hasn't been answered, but the drumbeat of intention continues inside BMW. Current M boss Frank Flasch told Australian site Car Sales, "We are investigating M variants that may also be stand-alone, that don't have a predecessor."

Note that Flasch qualified that a potential model may be a product of M division, as opposed to based on a BMW offering, but that is of course the primary interest for enthusiasts. Car Sales said it understands Flasch is the leading figure behind the exploratory push, but the exec wouldn't be drawn out on what kind of variants, nor how many, that M is investigating. The outlet said another source mentioned that with the studies being in "a very early phase," multiple body styles as well as powertrains are still on the table....

... Flasch told Car Sales that the R&D exec supports the current investigation into something more for M. If an original M model does come, it sounds like it will tend to the super instead of the hyper end of things. Flasch said of a hypercar, "From a brand perspective it is not needed; M is strong as it is. Economically, hypercar projects are always difficult, and so the prerequisites to turn such a project into reality are obviously very difficult, but I would not rule it out."

In 2022, the M department will celebrate its 50th anniversary as an independent company. The safe money is on seeing something special then.

Imagine modifying the i8 to be a true sports car like the Audi R8... but then I guess it wouldn't really technically be a standalone M car.

Not that I could ever afford such a thing, but would be cool. I'd image with BMW telling their board they are working on cutting costs seems pretty unlikely tho.

There are ways to secure funding for such things - in the guise of pilot program / R&D study for future tech that can be used across the board as an example. As long as it's not so bespoke as to be completely unusable elsewhere.

What did Madonna sing? "I've heard it all before"
I hope I'm wrong but if they can't even produce an updated i8S, I will be bluer than the BMW logo holding my breath for a pure M car... please do prove us wrong ///M

Considering all the cuts being made for Electrification, it's highly doubtful.

BWM might actually have to start cutting some models like Mercedes is planning on doing.

Limited edition M car with all the race data collected from GTE and formula e in case it's a hybrid - could be very promising.

BMW doesn't need a supercar IMO.
Super/hyper car market is already saturated and don't see any huge profit there.
I just hope BMW makes nice small high quality nimble cars like M2 CSL or Z4M coupe CSL

BMW doesn't want to make a Z4 M because of sales numbers, they'd rather make X6 M's, so a standalone M model wouldn't be in their best interest. A standalone M model would be awesome, but expensive and a very low in sales, although they could produce a limited amount, but w/ BMW's current goal being sales over everything, I doubt it will happen, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Well, guess I better ask for a substantial raise now to prepare to afford the thing!

(Honestly I'd be happy with a M2C to tool around in if I'm being honest. I wouldn't know what to do with a super car)

Yeah there's only so much car I can use in the Northeast - if I am getting something to add to the garage it's going the other direction in terms of GT luxury not performance oriented. Speaking of garages, you have excellent taste my good man! I think I am 2 years newer on ZHP and 2 years older on 2-Series.

I agree. I think something special will be coming out for M Division golden anniversary.

Bring it on, I think we could use a halo.

It would be if it replaced the i8 entirely, especially if it merely repurposed the underlying platform and shared nothing aesthetically with the i8.

BMW won’t do it because they now care more about being a mass market luxury car maker than the Ultimate Driving Machine.

And even if they decided to do it, it will be disappointing because they’ve lost their edge over the competition, and i have no faith in their ability to build a compelling supercar (or even true M car)

Come on BMW. Please prove me wrong on both counts. I really really want you to (sincerely, and without an iota of sarcasm)
