Arrow BMW Digital Key - how it works (video)

All I can say is it's about time BMW...

Quote:
The BMW Digital Key allows you to turn your smartphone into a car key. With the key, you'll be able to lock and unlock your BMW and even start the engine without needing a physical key. Your digital key will be stored securely in the BMW Connected App. The option 'Digital Key for 5' allows you to share it with up to 5 other people. You will be provided with a key card that has the same functions as the one on your phone.

In this video, we'll show you how to install the Digital Key, how it works, and how to share it with your family and friends.

Very cool - although it's interesting they state on the video that a Samsung Galaxy phone with Android 8 is used, and yet BMW offers poor integration with Android as a whole.

Couldn't care less. Touching a door handle works better for me.

Kinda feel that way too. Give me a card no thicker and larger than two stacked credit cards so I can slip it in my wallet and I’d be very happy.

Do you have to place your phone in that exact bin area to start the car? I want to leave it in my pocket....

If it's anything like the Model 3, it should be easy - shouldn't even have to take out the phone - just walk up and go

I'm assuming this app replaces the key fob entirely it's not just remote start?

It better work on the Apple Watch connectedapp. That way there's no need to put the phone up to the handle.... which looks idiotic.

I've never seen that interior color before. Looks like it's covered in ash. Maybe they can call it ash interior if they come out with that. Even the red interior still has black dash and steering wheel with wood or stainless steel/al cantara trim.

Seems like a cool idea, but in the end I find it less practical than the regular key, mostly due to the range limitations of the NFC.

Still very useful in cases when you forget your key, so instead of going back to get it, you can drive that day with a bit limited practicality of the Digital Key.

TLDW on the video.. will watch later..

I have locks on both my home (Kevo) and garage door (WIFI opener) that can be operated in three ways..

with physical key
via Bluetooth and or WIFI from phone
via internet from anywhere

if the BMW digital key can will allow the car to do all three items above I am all for it.

Has anyone seen if it will be available for already purchased vehicles. I got my 2019my 430 last week. Would be a bummer to miss it by a few weeks.

About time...carrying around keys should've been obsolete years ago. Once the US can fully adopt mobile (NFC) payments, wallets will be obsolete too.
