Homelink Garage Door Signal

Hi all. I just picked up my 330i a week ago and am having a problem with the Homelink garage door opener. I can get it programmed, but the signal range is so poor in my apartment building garage it will only work when I'm leaving and I can't get a signal when coming home (because the garage gate is preventing me from getting close enough I assume).

Never had this problem with my prior Mercedes or Mazda, so I don't think it's the building's garage door unit's fault.

Before I take it in to the dealership for service, is this a common problem and are there any tricks for extending the signal range? I'm using a fresh battery in my remote when programming.

Sounds like low transmitter output power. Does your remote operate the door OK?

Try deleting the stored remote and try again. If gate radio uses rolling codes sometimes it takes a trick to get it programmed properly. Google the model # of your remote control along with Homelink. You should find specific instructions for that radio.

Yes, the remote works fine from a decent distance. I've also tried deleting the stored remote and reprogramming and the same thing happens...Homelink only works when I'm right next to the gate radio. I don't think it's a rolling code unit.

Sounds to me that Homelink has low transmitter power. Goodluck getting the dealer to replace.

The "success percentage" of the Homelink in my G20 has been a bit underwhelming too.. but I'm wondering if it could be 2.4G interference between the WiFi in my radar detector (Max360c), the mobile hotspot, and the Chamberlain garage door opener. I say this because WiFi connectivity on the detector seems unreliable.

I don't think its a Homelink power issue, because when it works, I can press the button to open the door when I'm passing my neighbors house at about the same distance it worked in my prior car. It's just that sometimes it takes multiple presses or doesn't work until I'm right up on the garage door. Overall reliability is maybe 80%. I plan to experiment and see if turning the RD off first makes a difference.

I'm sure the RD is connecting to the car at 2.4G but not sure the garage door opener operates in that range.

I think that the Chamberlain remote has the frequency on the label.

I looked at the remote and it does not. But I have the manual for the door opener I will dig up later. A little research seems to indicate these operate in the 300Mhz range.

Isn't it standard?

Looks like it's standard here in the US.

I've found that LED light bulbs in the garage really screw up the range of any garage door remote.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I have seen this on other forums. Depending on the manufacture LED light bulbs spray RF energy that interferes with the operator receiver. The LED bulbs were removed and the problem went away.
Good Luck!
