S58 idle quality
Hey everyone, I have a 2022 M4 manual. When the vehicle idles, warm or cold, there is often a bit of a jumpiness to the digital RPM guage and the exhaust kind of burbles as well. It runs lovely overall and in motion there's no lack of inline-6 smoothness but the idle is different than my past BMW's.
I saw a thread on it and people chimed in and said that their G8X/S58 motor does the same thing and that it is normal for high torque vehicles. This is probably the most powerful car I've ever owned so I just wanted to ask fellow owners if this is normal. I also still am a couple hundred away from the break-in service, so I don't know if I should expect it to change after that. It is an awesome vehicle, no doubt. Thanks! |

Thank you, however I might be missing it, all I see in the manual that may elude to what I'm describing is: "Because of the high engine dynamics, the maximum RPM with the vehicle stationary is reduced."
Is that what you (and BMW) are referring to? |

You need to continue reading after that section. In the manual it states the following regarding warm up:
Warm-up During the engine warm-up phase, the high- performance engine has a somewhat rougher running behavior because of the emission controls. During the engine warm-up phase, the start occurs at an increased idle speed, which leads to increased exhaust system noises. |

I have noticed what the manual describes during warm up. After warm up I do not experience what you are describing. With that being said, is there any hesitation from a stop? Analytical thinking suggests that if it continues through acceleration then it's a spark issue. If not then maybe fuel pressure at idle issue. Im spit-balling and reaching conclusions based on my experience, but others may see it differently.

Yeah I’m not sure- I think it may be normal, I’ll have to check out another G8X, in the old thread I was viewing people said that there’s was the same. My car is completely stock with around 950 miles on it, has been the same since I got it.

My '21 G80 Comp has been doing this since new. I've had it for 17 months and it is currently at 14k miles. Besides being a DD, it gets worked well and often. I shrugged it off a long time ago, especially when there were other threads talking about lumpy idles.
I wouldn't sweat it unless the engine blows up |

I also wonder that it's more visible with the digital tach than it would be with a classic needle setup. |

My ‘22 manual with 15.5k miles does this as well. Not a huge increase of rpm’s but a noticeable small bump every now and then at operating temps. Has been happening since PCD. Not a cause for concern as it always smooths out after.

So it still moves around a little even at full engine temperature?

I noticed a bit of a rough idle on my '23 comp a few days ago. At first I felt it, and you can see it jump around a bit on the tach.
1130 miles no break-in service yet, all stock. Car was warmed up. |

Every M3 since the OG has had rough idles. It's just the way M rolls.

Mine bounce around when idle in any engine condition. I dont feel it though and the variation is maybe 100 rpm in either direction according to the digital needle.

Since you said your coming up on break in service OP just voice your concerns then and make sure everything is okay. To me it's normal as mine does this but no harm in having the techs check it out to quell your concerns.

Mine is exactly the same as yours - RPMs vary a little bit hot or cold, gauge jumps just a little bit (but you really have to look to see it). I figure as long as it pulls correctly, starts and drives as it should, then its all normal. Nothing to worry about I don't think
