G20 02NH MSports Brake - Coding Required?

Hi, hope I posted in the right topic Does anyone know if I retrofit my G20 320i with the M Sports brake kit 02NH (removed from a 330i), would I need to perform DSC coding? I'm asking because it seems that many experienced mushy brakes when they installed the M Performance brakes until they get the coding sorted, and I'm wondering if M Sports would be the same.

Thanks!

If you are planning on performing a complete 330i brake swap (i.e. front and rear calipers and rotors), then I would recommend coding the DSC.

Please check to make sure the DSC and master cylinder are the same for both models. A quick search on Bimmercat.com would suggest the DSC is the same but the master cylinder is different.

Thanks Larry Yes I will be doing a full swap (front and rear), still deciding if I should go for a new set of M Performance instead of this (as I wanted to remain on 18" wheels).

And thanks for pointing me to Bimmercat, seems that M Sports and M performance users the same master cylinder (34336892205), and I do need a new master cylinder. That's interesting because I noticed the M Performance Brake Kit sold doesn't come with the master cylinder simply because 330i and above uses 34336892205, while I'm on 34336892204. And theres no 320i in North America.

M-Performance Brake Kit Installation instructions lists a version of the kit that includes a brake booster (https://rparts-sites.s3.amazonaws.co...ll%20Instr.pdf)

I checked Bimmercat and it looks like you may also need a booster for the upgrade.

Thanks Larry - yes I will need a new brake booster and master cylinder. Seems like it's more worth it with the M Performance with all these factored in.

Hey alienz, did you ever get round to upgrading your brakes? Any advice or feedback?

Hey pcube , not exactly. I ran multiple options (new msport caliper and rotors, used caliper new rotors etc etc) and because i have a different master cylinder and brake booster.. the difference between a msport and the mperformance kit shipped to my location were actually not much. i ended up going with the mperformance calipers, iys arriving mid nov. Ive also arranged for someone to code that in, fingers cross . will post some pics when i get it installed.

unless you are like me who have a lower spec 320, else msport makes more economic sense. I actually like the blue better

So far two separate sources (the workshop and an owner who has done the upgrade from 320) have told me that the brake master cylinder and booster do not have to be replaced. Coding the DSC seems to be the more critical factor in ensuring the brakes work like they are supposed to.

The part numbers for brake booster and master cylinder are different for 320 vs the rest (330, 340), so its really up to individual preference and comfort if we want to change it or not. Same goes with the coding, the local workshops were also telling me most folks dont code it after changing it. Fyi one of the local workshop actually provides the master cylinder and coding as part of the package, his price reflects it too.

So its really up to you Im a sucker for getting the right setup especially when it comes to brakes and wheels, so I made a point to change them.

Finally got it installed - the shop couldn't get the brake booster / master cylinder on, so that is still something to do. Initial response: brakes feels much softer than stock, the mechanics were so worried they re-bleed twice and wasnt comfortable with me driving away. I find it drivable, but wasn't very confident with ebrake.

Got it coded today and to be honest, couldn't feel a big difference with before i code. So until I get the master cylinder changed, won't be able to tell much.

Looks great! Sorry to hear that our fears about mushiness on the brake feel came true though. Was this the first retrofit that the workshop did? Kinda troubling that the mechanics themselves were surprised...

The clearances on 19 inch rims look really tight on the front. Pretty sure there are some designs which would not fit.

The clearance is actually quite good for 19" - let me take some closeup pictures. Wouldn't be any issues if the offset is < 38. I had a 12mm spacer on too.

My previous car was a 4 rings so the workshop specializes in that This was the first fit up of mperformance brakes on a G20 there. Swapping of master cylinder.. probably not that common haha.

I have the same pedal feel after I installed the M Performance kit on my 330i. Initially the pedal was much softer and really have to press down far to get any stopping power. Although after driving 1000 mi and the pads starting to bed in, I did feel some improvement though not as much as I had hoped. Lurking around in other forums, people have said that it's the M Performance pads that don't have a strong bite. I wonder if swapping the pads will help.

The description on most sites says, "18" or larger wheels required. BMW M Performance wheels will clear but some other 18" rims may not."

I have a set of BBS XR 18" ET28 for my winter setup... No clue if they'd fit over the M-Performance setup.

Despite what the shop told you, the official instructions calls for a retrofit a new brake booster..

Nice mod regardless

yup currently in same situation as the OP

bought the kit without the booster and brake travel is to the floor although everything else was done perfectly

bought booster/cylinder setup with part# 34336892205 which is what is listed on realoem as the booster for the Msport/M performance Red setup

what is confusing though is when you search the brake kit that comes with the booster on bimmercat the booster with the kit has part# 34336892203

reached out to a lot of persons in different countries and 2203 is either discontinued or they have no idea what it is for

hoping the part from realoem solves my issue, would be nice if OP could respond and let us know if he ever got through

Hey guys sorry hasn't been on the forum for a while missed this. I had the brake booster but never got it installed. I got it coded for mperformance brakes, and after bedding in plus 3000km later, it felt better, but I still didnt think its great. I had 4 pots brakes in my past two cars and the experience was always good progressive modulation feel when you depressed the pedals, but it feels I need to press harder and more here. Good news is I had to eBrake a few times and I always got it to work I would install the brake booster eventually

ive been using bimmercat dot com to lookup part number, look at the model of yours and match the booster used for those with msport and mperformace brakes. I would think the right part number is 34 33 6 889 796

Hey bro, thank you for responding

I had the exact same experience as you so I ordered the M Perf/M Sport booster and master cylinder according to realoem

Would be installing by end of this month so would definitely update then
