330i - Second worrying update

Unfortunately it looks like my worst fears are turning into reality!
As some of you know, I picked up my brand new G21 330i MSport Touring about two weeks ago, and after three miles a "drivetrain" alert flashed up on the screen, prompting me to drive straight back to the dealership.

Well, today I have been informed that despite replacing the VANOS unit, the car is still not fixed, and that basically they have no idea how to fix it now and are waiting for advice from Munich!

In short, it looks like I have three options now:
1) wait and hope they'll fix the car, but it might never happen or take months - the sales manager seemed to be discouraging me from this option
2) reject the car and order a new one - this might apparently only take six weeks. But should I trust a 330i again? Or should I change to 320i, or maybe 330d?
3) reject the car altogether, get my money back and buy something else

What would you do in my place?

Are they supplying you a loaner whilst yours is off the road? If they were, and the 330i was where my heart was, i'd stick with that choice and wait for repair or reject/order new.

If no loaner, I'd probably be getting the money back and walking away.

option 2 seems like a bit of a disappointing compromise to me if you change model.

Option 2 for sure. As long as they loan you something meantime then look forward to a new one in six weeks. Id rather that than some vague repair where they clearly dont know the issue. If they clear it up and the problem returns in a month your position is much weaker.

Id stick with the choice of 330i - if you change your mind youll have a nagging feeling you compromised and took second choice.

Option 2 seems the way to go. Again as long as you get a courtesy car.

I’ve had a G20 330i for just shy of 18 months now and had no real issues. (Apart from having to have my rear spoiler replaced). Apart from your bad experience I’ve not heard of any other transmission issues.

A very good point.

Option 2. Courtesy car for 6 weeks of cheap motoring and a shiny new zero mileage 330i at the end with all the latest software on it!!

Same for me - option 2 and 330i.

I don’t see that many people with issues. For me, my G21 was the first new car where I’ve not had to take it back for even minor tech or trim issues.

330i - Second worrying update

I note from other posts that you ordered in August 2020, so it would be interesting to see the price delta building your replica car at today's rates?

If it's a dramatic price increase for a new order today, and you still feel the same love for the car, then option 2 seems most logical.

Should it be a negligible difference, is there any harm in testing the negotiation power of option 3, with 21 plate sales probably quite low in these uncertain times. Surely they won't just hold the door open and watch you leave, even if your just going to the next BMW dealer out of principal 🤷🏻*♂️

I would expect the dealer to absorb the costs for option 2. My wife had to reject an X1 in 2012 after we found missing items in the tech pack down to a manufacturing fault. Dealer said they couldn’t be resolved so they ordered a new car and she kept the faulty one for 4 months, then they just swapped the cars and no change to the PCP.

Absolutely get a new build, and they can put you in a loan car whilst you're waiting.

Thanks everyone - I have in fact asked to reject the car and request a new build, and BMW will support that and give me a 330e Touring in the meantime - therefore all good so far! I will update you again when I get the new car, hopefully in six weeks or so

Reject the car! Any fault within six months of new registration that cant be fixed with one attempt means your are entitled to all the money you have paid plus 8% interest. I legally rejected a 2016 Jaguar XE-S 3.0 Supercharged after four months of hopeless build quality and reliability but, in particular, a relentlessly non functioning InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. It was my first and last British built and designed car that was replaced with a Mercedes C43 Coupe...

Great result and the correct option IMO. I love my 330e and after that if I could afford to run it a I'd love a 330i. Have zero interest in buying another diesel car.

Fantastic news and great that theyve given you a comparable car as a loaner.

You definitely made the right choice.
