M340i Software Update Neutered Sport+

I just had my M340i in to get its first oil change and look at a few other things I wanted fixed. They updated the software and despite adding a climate control rule to turn the heated steering wheel on under a certain temp, it changed the way Sport+ behaves. It now upshifts a lot more readily and the exhaust burbles & pops are greatly reduced. I'm really bummed about this, it may be juvenile but I loved those burbles and pops and the character it added to the car. Is reverting to old software a thing? As much as I like my heated steering wheel to turn on automatically, I'd rather have the character in Sport+ back. Really disappointed about this.

What software did you get updated to? Double check to make sure you're in sport+ and not sport individual. My sport individual was reset after an update and set to sport instead of sport plus. But if you're in sport plus and getting a less aggressive note, make sure you're calling the dealership as well as corporate to complain.

sounds like those emissions regulations are crawling into the states... I hope that's not the case. I'll ask my buddy if his 340 was affected as well. if so, that's a shame let us enjoy what little time we have left with juvenile combustion noises

I've refused to update mine since this past summer as I'm worried they'll slowly but surely reduce the noise in the MY20's to make it more equal to the way the MY21's sound

I am on the latest software in a 2020MY 340i and notice no change at all. I have heard a few mentions of that on here, so I was looking out for it.

I took delivery of mine in Dec. 2019. Is it possible you took delivery later and already had a later software version and there wouldn't be a difference if it was updated further?

I took mine September 2020.
New SW update (over the air) is sitting there "ready to install" however, I have been ignoring it...

I just had a software update yesterday but my car is a 21 and is brand new so I am a little confused as to why I needed a software update on this particular model...when it is BRAND new.
I can't remember the update number but is there anywhere I can find that so I can tell you guys which update it was?
I haven't driven my car in anger yet so have no idea if it reduced what few burbles I have anyway.

I took delivery Sept 2020. I guess that is possible, but my pops and burbles are pretty aggressive. I could not imagine it having been even louder than it is now. I have head turning backfires on a downshift.

The changes I notice are the car readily goes into 5th and even 6th gear which it almost never used to do in Sport+. Off throttle burbles and pops are almost gone. Downshift burbles are still there in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears BUT it's inconsistent. Where before the circumstances where they would happen were consistent, now they aren't, at least not that I've found yet. Sometimes they're there, sometimes not.

Almost every month, BMW releases a new firmware update for ECUs car (a new integratiin level, for car's control modules). iDrive updates are less frequents.

Copy. Good Lord, they are controlling our cars from an office cube somewhere in Europe and chopping off our cars' proverbial balls. SMH.

Is it any wonder why I am old school? No one at Ferrari can mess with my 308QV. It is decatted and growls and burbles on the overrun and no one in some stupid office on a laptop half way around the world can fuck with it.

well, im old school too. Really hate the fact that a car has a SIM and a data connection to somewhere. And get very very angry when dealer updates car software without asking me first.

But, for now, BMW rules in what you can control and what they do control about your purchased car. The only thing you can do is prevent dealer from updating without telling you first.

This is no longer correct with the G series vehicles. The iDrive software is part of the IStep. Everything is bundled together and updates constantly are being released. The major updates are released in March, July and November so those would correspond to iDrive versions 03/YYYY.xx, 07/YYYY.xx and 11/YYYY.xx or I-Level (ISTep) versions zzzz-YY-03-5xx, zzzz-YY-07-5xx and zzzz-YY-11-5xx. For example, on my X5 I received the OTA last month so I'm now on IStep level S18A-20-07-554 or the version that shows in iDrive as 07/2020.54.

I've had my 2020 M340i xdrive since August 2019 and I'm up to date as of the OTA update this last week. I've not noticed any differences since purchase. It's still fast AF and sounds great. You guys are smoking placebo. I drive almost exclusively in sport+ and manual shifting.

Actually I did notice one difference. CarPlay finally connects properly every time I get in now so I think they fixed something there.

I just flashed my car and they had to put it on the new DME software and the burbles and pops are totally gone.
I went with mission performance and I asked them to make it pop and they said the new update prevents the car from popping. I don't know how true this is, I'm waiting to see if I can find someone with BM3 and newest update to see if that is true. Alex at mission said I can send him and email and they'll see what they can do but they don't like to do it because they want to save the turbo. The thing about that is the burbles and pops were significantly louder and more noticeable when the car was stock and old DME so I'd think bmw would have tuned the engine to not deteriorate the turbo with the stock burbles it has. I know it sounds like I'm a deuce for saying this, but the car doesn't feel the same when I let off the throttle at high speeds after shifting up and If I see BM3 has a way around this then I'm going with them. I'll keep you guys updated

MBM340 ,

With the introduction of G20, 3 series cars were provided the ability to receive OTA software updates. US cars were only recently enabled to accept this capability. For example, my car received version 07/2020.54 about a month ago. Prior to that, only dealers could update software.

To find out what version of software your car has, select CAR, SETTINGS, GENERAL, scroll down to & select REMOTE SOFTWARE UPGRADE. This option serves two purposes. Displayed on first line is version currently in car. If you select, CHECK FOR UPDATES, it will do just that.

BMW updates software to fix bugs/problems & provide additional or enhancing features. Major updates are made in March, July & November each year -- hence the update numbering system; additionally, minor updates are the 2 digits after decimal.

To find out what is included in major updates, go to BMW USA Connected Portal: https://connecteddrive.bmwusa.com/ap...x.html#/portal

At botton is a listing of what's included in major updates.

Finally, think the reason you got an OTA update, even though your car is new, is to put your car on the same baseline version. Again using my car as an example, it had been updated to 07/2020.45 at dealer, but as I said, was OTA'd to 07/2020.54

Hope that helps!

This could be true for id7, but in id6 are idrive and ilevel bundled together? Currently im on ilevel SA18A-20-07-560 and idrive version O2014C1R

I can’t believe BMW would change such a pronounced characteristic of the car without even notifying customers or an official announcement. What happened to this being a car for enthusiasts??
