The video is a must watch. As sketch monkey points out..our brains are not excepting the grill on the E46 even though to some it may not look "bad". Regardless I sure would not like it on my F80. |

Nope not for me, that’s why I ordered the last of the current M4s, I’ll lease this one and see what happens,, if it have that ugly BBQ grill on the front, by the end of my lease , I’ll probably move on to something else. ByBy BMW .

My guess is the video is meant to show how the general public as well as car enthusiast often views a new design on its debut. At first (to many) it's yuck. but then after time it grows on them. With that said..I agree I would not want that grill on my e46 or my F80. But...that has a lot to do with how damn good the past E46 and current F 80/82 front end looks.

So how much time does it take for the first (to many, who we kidding, all) to adjust because no matter how often I look at it, unless it's a picture in a pitch black room it's still yuck!

For many.. like you, maybe never. Let's use the iconic Mustang for example. I have a 2004 Mustang Cobra Terminator. That body style S- 95 or "new edge"came out in 99 and was produced through 2004. I liked it from the get go especially in Cobra trim. Then in 2005 the S-197 came out and was produced until 2014. Hated it and never warmed up to it even after 9 years. The current Mustang on the other hand (I think) looks awesome. Loved it first time I laid eyes on it.

I'm 100% sure F80 and G20 owners will start buying aftermarket big grills once G80 is released. And those who buy F80 because of "grills" will regret their decisions forever.

The Chinese market only buys large BMWs. They barely sell any 3 series and the ones they do sell are long wheelbase versions. Also, while China may be the largest single market for cars/BMW, western countries as a whole are still a large majority. Why would BMW cater a car specifically towards 1% of the market? If that. While it could be argued that large grilles on the 7 series or X7 might be because of the Chinese market, it makes no sense to make the regular 3 series a normal grille and only the M3/4 and 4 series with the buck tooth grille if it's just for China. None at all.
The assertion that the Chinese market is responsible for this is lazy at best.. This is just BMW's new design language. Simple as that. I guarantee it won't be as bad in a few years. It took me a while to warm up to the E90. While I still think the E46 is nicer, the E90 LCI is a fairly good looking car, IMO. |
