Drag raced an x3m last month at 1 day m school in thermal. Brake boosted 2.5k rpm there was still lag in 1st gear, the car felt lack in power until 2nd gear.

Low end for the X3M and X4M was notably underwhelming in that company. Great pull (and really great sound) once things were moving, but the trip through the bottom third of the tach seemed leisurely compared to the S55-laden M4 and downright slow against the brutal launches from the M850xi.

Other participants had similar experiences when we talked at the end. The X3M/X4M seemed out of place in that event, and nearly universally the least impressive of all the cars driven that day.
Same experience at the "M Town Tour"... the X3M felt like a heavy truck, the M235i was soggy, and neither deserved to be in the same equivalence class as the M2 Competition.

I've said it before, but if there was a HUD option on the M2 I would trade in my M4 Comp for one tomorrow.
HUD is the one thing you can't live without? That's kinda weird, man haha. I like HUD too but if the rest of the M2 driving experience can't overcome that, it cannot be THAT much better I guess.

I agree it's totally weird. But after the test drive I though 'this is not quite as fast as my M4, but I can maybe live with it for the extra engagement'. But the interior felt kinda dated and I *really* missed seeing information in the HUD. I think if I'd been test driving it on the track then the more lively handling would perhaps have overcome the downsides, but the M Town Tour testdrive route was almost entirely on busy roads and you really don't get a feel for a car in 20 minutes of trying to avoid the traffic.

Yeah that is definitely not an ideal scenario ... however, maybe more realistic haha. Easy to fall in love with a car by ripping it around on track too so there's that.... the interior for sure is dated. I had a '16 F80 and recently was shopping for a new fun/daily/track capable car... I couldn't bring myself to get an M2C because it reminded me so much of my "old" car on the interior. Oh well. I'm sure I would've really enjoyed the car but not this go-round

I felt the same way at the M town tour. X3MC was too laggy for my tastes. The low RPM issues seem to be a theme with this vehicle. Once around 3k it's a pure beast. Handling was also stellar IMO. Was looking to upgrade my x3 m40i but left with an overall sour feeling unfortunately. Love the lower end excitement and responsiveness of the B58. Hoping too they figure it out for the new M3. It's on my shortlist!

As an owner of a X3Mcomp the lag was terrible when new. After first service it got better. When moving the throttle to sport or sport plus it improves significantly. After 8000 miles it has really improved. It stills shows its ugly head from time to time but in 40-60 degree weather, when warmed up it is a rocket. I am certain some of it is tuning to protect the trans from all the torque, and also the engine was clearly designed for the lighter M3/M4. Alpina uses the engine in the B3 and B4 that is coming but changes the tune for more torque and less hp. My guess is that would have been perfect for the X3M. Any questions feel free to message me. And no I am not a rookie, having owned 3 M6 vehicles, F85 X5M and now awaiting delivery of my new m8 comp.

Peace,
Noushy

All turbo cars don't have lag. Have you driven the new 2020 GTS 53 Mercedes? A turbo 6 cylinder which uses an electric motor to spool the turbo's, basically getting rid of all turbo lag at least noticeable to the driver.

Porsche does this too. They actually were one of the first to use electric motors to spool up turbos to remove lag.

Lets not forget the Shelby CSX VNT and much much later the 997 Turbo VNT.

I wonder if a VNT setup with perhaps a bit more lag is a better option than adding some weight (50kg?) for a 48v setup for an electric turbo
