Sainz the "DRS dealer", outwitting both the faster Mercedes cars (fresh medium tires) by giving Norris a DRS tow for numerous laps. The accidental 'cooperation' between master of ceremony Sainz and assistant Norris made them secure P1 and P2 (WDC and WCC points). Both knew that they were sitting ducks with their old tires when faster Mercedes cars were hunting them down, but managed to defend their track positions with team work. Without DRS tows it would have been a sure-fire P1-P2 for Mercedes (unlikely that Russell would have made the pilot error he impatiently made during the final lap - he would have already passed both Sainz and Norris prior to the final lap).
  • Lap 56/62: Sainz (request): "Gap to Lando every lap." | Scuderia: "Copy that."
  • Lap 58/62: Scuderia (worried): "Lando .8 behind, .8 with DRS." | Sainz: "Yeah, it's on purpose." | Scuderia: "Copy that."

They were on 35 lap old hard at that point which is normal to lose grip, by the 40th lap where they pitted, they had zero grip left.

Look at the Ferrari's, on the 30th lap on those hards, they fell off hard.

We'll resume normal Dutch/Austrian Anthem next weekend for sure.

Max was completely unfazed when asked how it felt that his winning streak had ended, he's got his historic ten races in a row and actually looked like he was fed up with extending this all time record! He wants to concentrate more of what's happening on the track than chasing a now pointless target.

But once those MEDs were on, he was lapping 3 seconds faster than everyone, and was on the same pace as the Mercedes with low fuel load and fresher tires.

He almost caught LEC at the end too.

Suzuka is where they'll be able to test out all their upgrades that they couldn't here, and the Ferrari still has bad tire deg compared to the RB.

And if it rains in Japan, which often it does, RB is guaranteed a win as Max is very good in the rain, and Ferrari straight line speed won't be an issue.

The TD has not affected anything on that RB, or Max wouldn't be able to work his way up the standings on pure pace.
Well , as I said : We'll see it at Suzuka ..
The Ferrari is now extremely fast everywhere . Monza with low downforce and Singapore with high downforce .
Ferrari has found more power with the new PU and turbos.
Yes , the Ferrari cooks the tyres very quickly by the extreme power , but in Qualifying Sainz was 1.5 sec. faster than MAX .
In F1 terms , 1.5 sec. is a sea of time ..

Yes I agree . MAX is best of the world in the rain and very likely the best ever in the rain ...

1.5 seconds due to a bad setup, and track specific. the RB car isn't the best qualifying car anyways.

Qualifying also doesn't award points or wins.

They'll be fine next race, it wouldn't be worrying if their race pace was behind, but this race showed that was not the case.

Last year Max got pole in Japan and the win against a competitive Ferrari.

Mate . The right answer to our discussion lies in Suzuka

If you want proof it's track specific...

This is back in 2015 when Mercedes was winning everything, and then singapore GP came, and they were 1.5 secs slower than pole

It's a weird anomaly with this track that makes fast dominant teams, slow.

Then next race came and they went back to normal service.

I like looking at data

I wanted to find out why RB was so slow in qualifying too, then I looked deep into it and found out Mercedes had the same exact issue and they didn't know why. Only for next race, they gapped the entire field by like 30+ seconds.

I also watched mostly the laptimes in the race and Max was basically lapping the same as the top 4 on hards, until everyone else got new hards, then he went on MEDs and was lapping as fast as the mercedes, if not a tenth quicker.

See also the earlier post featuring Andrew Shovlin (Mercedes) emphasizing peculiarities of the Singapore track and race.

Red Bull knew in advance that of all race tracks, Singapore suits their RB19 the least of all. I predicted maximum P6 or P7 for Verstappen. Considering Ocon and Russell DNF, he finished P5. As the race progressed, more rubber on track = improved grip (after FP1 and FP2 most rubber was washed away by tropical rain - FP3 and qualies were tricky as regards grip).

Next week down at Suzuka it will be back to the order of the day for them.

Note that the DNS management came from Carlos Sainz and Not the Ferrari pit strategist who were the ones that squandered a set of mediums in qualifying that forced the no pit stop strategy later in the race. As I said earlier never underestimate Ferrari pit strategist ability to screw the pooch.

Never the less one of the best races of the year and congratulation to Carlos Sainz To be honest there has been times in the past I didn't think he had this in him.

Yes . Last year Sainz was still a gravel racer

The new upgraded Ferrari PU and turbos work really well for him .
Don't know what's going on with Charlie ..
Or is Ferrari just playing it safer with Charlie's PU with less of ponies ?
