Can't say I'm surprised at the result. The quote "It's another instance of BMW telling you that the car is sporty rather than delivering the experience" hits the nail on the head and has been accurate for every redesign since 2010.

They really glossed over how mediocre the Alfa is aside from driving dynamics, but for a lot of us here that stuff is less important than how a car drives.

I'd really like to know how the new passive dampers would do without RFT tires. BMW should really be sending the non-adaptive with Pilot 4S tires to the publications that obviously are biased towards driving dynamics like MT and C&D. Send the adaptive setups to the YouTube reviewers who just review the technology.

That said, the Giulia drives like the E90 and earlier 3 series so there's no doubt most auto journalists will love those cars.

No surprise, the modern 3 series isn't aimed at driving enthusiasts. The G20 is something I would recommend my mom to drive. Alfa is what I would drive.

I prefer my car interiors to not be made from the leftover Mazda parts bin.

As I see it, BMW appeals (has to, to succeed) to a much wider market than the Alfa. Many buy into BMW because of the competence of the overall package, not just driving dynamics, and that includes many driving enthusiasts.

BMW 3-series out sales the Alfa Giulia in Europe about 10:1. Guess we know who has got the right package for the users?

Then we have the issue of 3 different suspensions and the same for wheel sizes. Which combination is the 'sweet spot' for any particular user? Only test driving will sort that out for an individual, not any motor magazine review/opinion. Or any other user opinion for that matter.

You haven't said anything false, but what you are saying is that the means justify the ends. Essentially, it is OK for BMW to make luxury cars with some a sport mode since all that matters is sales numbers.

BMW has become too big and the world has become too global to produce what they used to, which was sports cars with some luxury sprinkled it. They can hit their sales targets all they want to, but it doesn't change the fact that they've watered down their products immensely. And it's a pure slap in the face to people like us who are at the core of the brand's identity.

It's been a while, weren't you the one claiming:

"I already own a Shelby GT500 a lamborghini murci a lotus Elise and a rx-8 for drifting if this helps" and also have three kids in college. Then you came back a while later and said you were graduating from college at 22 and were curious if you could afford to buy an M235. And now here you are commenting on the G20.

Is that all you or am I thinking of someone else?

no shockers here, Alfa is really trying to appeal to BMW enthusiast who own E generation cars and don't want to move onto new BMWs, hell they even sponsored the recent Bimmerfest and had test drives there!

Sales numbers will never be as high for the Alfa as the 3 series, but Alfa is clearly going for the title of "The Ultimate Driving Machine."

Your Fiat-Chrysler Alfa will spend a lot of time at the dealer, so mommy will pick you up from the service dept quite often.

Bimmers spend a lot of time at the dealer too, mine is there currently.

But yeah nothing is worse than anything related to Fiat and Chrysler, the worst from each side of the pond.

Wow they are pretty serious.

I'll be in the market in roughly 3 yrs time and am thinking M2 or Boxster, but the Giulia deserves a hard look for sure.

I'm one of these people - seriously considering the Giulia as my E-series replacement. I was unimpressed with the F series cars, however I'm holding out judgement on the G series until I get behind the wheel of one.

General consensus of G chassis cars so far (based on reviews and my own test drives): improved from the F chassis cars, marginally better than comparable Mercs and Audis, but still not particularly sporty.

For us old heads they are nice cars but don't "feel" like BMWs, they drive like cars from any other major luxury brand. What differentiates BMWs anymore from everybody else?

I would like to disagree, the front end of my g20 330i msport has a wonderful turn in. The front axle has a huge amount of grip, not even close to a a4.

Good suggestions, but I don't think it would matter. In the end I suspect that MT and C&D would draw the same conclusions.

Bmw is simply giving its market what they value and want. A quick perusal of the threads in this G20 section reveals threads about acoustic glass options, air conditioning, various tech questions, exterior color, hybrid cars, the sound of the door closing, etc. Consider too that this tends to be an enthusiast forum, and these are the subjects of discussion. The current market for the 3 series is not predominantly driving enthusiasts. The average 3 series driver seems to care more about image, tech, comfort, and luxury, not sporty driving dynamics.

Make no mistake, I'm not judging anyone on what they value in a car, just stating the dry facts. The 3er is a fashionable daily that tries to deliver a little something for everyone, and does so while offering driving dynamics that are slightly better than most of the competing brands' comparable models. If you want something more sporty, you'd do better to ante up for an m-car. By that I mean an m2, 3, or 4, or maybe an m5 for the more upscale luxury car feel.
