That Grille

Saw the M340i at the dealer today - IMHO, looks great except for that grille. Does anyone know if a gloss black grille (with normal slats) is available for port/VPC install?

Very interested in your feedback. I'm contemplating buying out my M3 (2016 SO 6MT as well) and have the chance to pick up an M340 lease at a pretty good rate. Is yours xdrive or RWD? I really hate to give back the M but I drive so many miles and am waffling on wanting to pick up the repair and maintenance risks.

Well, in your case, get the M340i, it is a no brainer - keywords (2016vs2020, many miles, interior, maintenance costs)

Quick update\synopsis:

It's been approximately 5 days, and although I still occasionally stalk the old M4 (sitting on the dealer lot all lonely! ), I am learning to appreciate the attributes of the M340i.

Although I haven't pushed the car hard yet, here's what I've learned so far:

- Acceleration: This car is a rocket. The power delivery is very refined, I can easily find myself going over the speed limit, without being aware of it. The on ramp entrance might not be as dramatic as other cars, but is effortless. In sport/sport+ the exhaust note sounds somewhat muted inside the cabin, and occasionally you'll hear the overrun burbles... which I like. I do plan on adding a downpipe and tune later on.

- Handling: I had the pleasure of going through a couple of roundabouts (during the rain nonetheless), in sport\sport+, at approximately 54 mph and the car felt planted. I had complete confidence during the maneuver, I cannot say the same about the dodge RAM Hemi that was behind me trying to keep up!! The night before, I went around the same roundabout in my wife's GS350 ( as a passenger) and there was a good amount of lean, at 30mph, granted it's not sport tuned...

- Interior: The controls are well laid out, and the materials feel top notch, I think Audi still has a slight edge in this department, but I do not feel BMW is too far behind. The seating is comfortable, once I'm in the car. But, I am 6'3", about 245ish on a good day, and entering\exiting the car can be interesting! I'm constantly brushing against the door seal when entering, maybe I need to drop some pounds or get an X4M40i!!

- Exterior: I'm still getting adjusted to looking at the car from different angles, the front grille is starting to grow on me, I guess it's just a matter of adapting to the design language. I do wish the M performance series had more styling differences from the 330i (eg. quad exhausts, slightly flared fenders), other than the cerium grey side mirrors and grille. I think it would be neat to show a more defined progression from 330i to full M. Although it does stand out in my subdivision, which has 3.5 BMWs per household!

Well coming from iDrive 5, I think it's refreshing (ie snappy response, sharp graphics)!

Tbh, I've been focusing on the driving dynamics, so I haven't played with it too much, aside from the gimmicky gesture control which can be pretty spotty at times. It's a lot easier to use the keypad, but "Hey BMW" works surprisingly well!

have you noticed that the iDrive 7 system seems to respond to random words besides just "Hey BMW"? My wife has complained about it several times in the month we've had the car. In mid conversation with passenger(s), it comes on and then you have to say "cancel" or hit the microphone button on steering wheel

I haven't noticed that exactly. But, if I'm watching a video and the letters BMW are said without the "Hey" part it will , sometimes ,respond.

Congrats! I'm really hoping to get to test drive one at the UDE or if my dealer will lend me one next time! I personally have grown to like the new styling, grill and all. It's a nice change of pace.

Thanks!

I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Might have a better experience at the UDE? I'm guessing they will have the car decently spec'ed out versus dealer stock(?).

They have xDrive M340i's available for 20 minute test drives at the "M Town on Tour" event at select dealers.

Mine local event is during the day on a Tuesday (have a job to go to), with the last spots after work being rush hour traffic. So I would be crawling along in the M340i at 10mph

I just discovered auto start/stop is disabled in sport/sport+ mode ... comfort/eco you have to manually turn it off.

So can you make Sport the default when you start the car it goes there directly? 🤔

Maybe this can be coded? I thought it could on the F30, but maybe I'm remembering wrong.

The more you use gesture control the better it works. It was very frustrating at first but now its second nature

It’s sort of silly but I love having multiple Sirius/XM stations buffering at once. I think it’s called smart favorites. After a few minutes driving you can scroll through your presets and each one starts at the beginning of the song.
