Swapping to Michelin PS4S
The ride on my M440i is better than I expected for low profile runflats on 19's, they're factory GY Eagle F1 A3 which I hear only good things about as far as runflats go, but that's still damning with faint praise. I am completely obsessive about ride quality and happy to throw some money at even small improvements.
Camskill have *-marked non-RFT PS4S in the right staggered sizes for a total of £700 inc delivery but not fitting, net of £60 Michelin cashback promotion. https://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?show=157321 https://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?show=157322 Anyone know of a better deal on a set of 4 PS4S ? Anyone else made the switch ? The 792M wheels look so good, I'm loathe to change them, also I don't want a change of tyre spec that goes outside the BMW approved list (to keep things easier to handle with both insurer and servicing dealer). I'm sure when I was browsing before, someone had a link to the list of tyres approved by BMW for fitment to the M440i, but can't find it now... |

Thanks yes, that has the list. Attaching it here as well in case this thread comes up in someone's search. It says G20 but I guess it is just as valid for G21 and G23...

But do they really have to be star rated? I'm sure insurers won't care. There are hundred of cars on the road with non-OEM tyres. Also servicing dealers can only grumble if your issue is related to tyres. So they can't refuse to replace a faulty headlight because you don't have star rated tyres on.

I actually have PS4S star marked and swap them when it gets colder for CrossClimates. Michelin say on their www that they are OK but to keep tread the similar on all tyres. TBH a car really shouldn't be that sensitive, and I have to wonder whether they are and whether a manufacturer would make one so.

I have these tyres and think Michelins make great hoops, as I could happily hoon around at 90 in the tipping rain on a motorbike, so seemed totally sensible to switch to PS4S when my Turanzas (stock ones) ran down.

Having read more about the characteristics of different Michelin tyres and re-watched a couple of Tyre Reviews videos on youtube (my favourite channel !) I have actually gone for PS5 (in the factory sizes but not available with * marking).
The *-marked PS4S is a great tyre but it's a little different to the normal PS4S, as the shorter dry but longer wet lap times in this video show: Then this is non-* PS4S vs PS5 I'm swapping for comfort while maintaining great performance in safety critical situations, especially in the cold and wet. The fact the PS5 are a bit cheaper than the PS4S is just a bonus (Footnote: when I put my car reg into Michelin UK's website and filter for "daily" or "high performance" use but not "track" use, the PS5 is the first tyre listed, so I'm comfortable it's not an insurance issue) |
