BMW working with Apple on futuristic digital "CarKey" using iPhone

BIMMERPOST

iPhone and Apple Watch

Apple working closely with BMW for Digital Key is no surprise. BMW was also the first car maker to adopt Wireless CarPlay, Apple’s advanced version of its useful infotainment feature based on the iPhone.

We expect Apple to brand their Digital Key support as CarKey, similar to CarPlay. It’s possible Apple will require the iPhone 11 and later for CarKey so the feature will be more convenient and secure, although beta code can be triggered on other iPhones.

Interesting information but when it comes to selling features can't see this as helping sway me to buy one of their cars.

I am all for convenience, but now if my phone is stolen in a restaurant, mall, etc... I am guessing I won't be seeing my car outside anymore either.

That would have to be very coordinated and targeted effort plus I am sure there will be a way to easily disable the feature from the iDrive.

I was mostly being sarcastic, but the way the article phrases it, where it will use nfc so you won't have to take the phone out of your pocket makes it feel like this is a car thiefs dream.

Finally!

I was able to graduate from a physical debit card to an APP, many years ago..

It's about time BMW & Apple jumped on the bandwagon and develop an exclusive NFC digital key technology.

new Teslas have an app to unlock etc. and a card for if you barrow your car to someone.. looks like this is another way to do it in a more complicated way.. if there wont be any fingerprint scanner or face rec. i prefer a traditional key..

I have pushbutton start on my MB, stupid as shit. Give me an old fashioned key, it's safe and secure. This all seems like tech for tech's sake.

Not sure anyone has read the article, but they show a picture of the Apple wallet with the digital key in it and there’s an option to select that allows the user to choose if they want a passcode/faceID or if they want it to auto use as needed. It’s an option for those who’d rather go instead of messing with keys in their pockets (suits anyone?) that may cause printing on the pants from pressure against them from sitting etc.

How hard would it be to combine (a smaller version of) BMWs display key with a fingerprint scanner.

Excellent. One less thing to carry around. I pay for things, open my garage, etc with my phone. Looking forward to the death of keys and wallets.

It does appear we are heading down the path where the only item you need to carry with you is your phone.

Like any with any new innovation, it's best to wait and evaluate how it was actually implemented.

I personally think there is a limit to how many roles a phone can perform.

It's mentality like this that prevents progress.

If you like a old fashioned key with no transponder at all then that's fine, just buy an old MB.

I highly doubt BMW thinks that this feature is going to be a difference in the public choosing one of their vehicles. Just a bonus...

It's basically like Tesla system with model 3's isn't it?

They can't even keep the integration between idrive and iPhones or CarPlay functioning correctly, imagine every time there's an iPhone software update you can't open your car, or it opens but it'll be a random door so some days you have to crawl through your boot... 🙄
