I'm going to start this one since it's been a problem for me but so far no one else has run into this problem.
My situation is that the parking brake engages (via pulling lever up), but does not disengage (push lever down). Furthermore I've replaced the shifter console thinking it may be a malfunction with the lever itself, which is not the case. Same problem remains. This allowed me to isolate the problem to being purely mechanical, but I still do not know where it may be at fault. Any help or further insight is appreciated. Thanks. Edit: I'd like to add that the parking brake disengages when using the Auto Hold button, just click twice and the parking brake will disengage. But it does not disengage with the parking brake lever. Very odd, I know. |

My car has 60,000 miles on it, sometime around 40,000 miles, it suddenly stopped working. Thanks for replying though! |

Jumping on to validate this issue with my 2020 m340i. Parking brake no longer disengages when pressing the button down. It disengages automatically when put in gear, so it hasn’t been a major issue. Dealer wants $500 just to look into it as I’m now out of warranty. Not sure if this is worth fixing, or if someone can shed some light on a solution I can take to an independent shop. Would be nice if this was a recall.

Same thing happened to me a few years back. Pushing the PB button would not release the brake. Had to turn Auto Hold on, then push button and brake would release.
Took it in and they replaced the Parking Brake button and problem solved. Said it was a faulty button. I'm trying to find the service invoice to see if there are more details and will post back when I do. That said these cars are too young for a switch like this to fail and there should be a BMW campaign to have this covered if indeed it is becoming very common. |

I've replaced the shifter console at the Bmw service but the same problem remains. |

Have been like this for 2 years now, not sure what to do.. Took the car to dealership and they won’t diagnose it unless I update my vehicle firmware (My car is highly modified so this is not an option). Guess I gotta live with it until I can bring it into a BMW specialist to have it looked at. |

Today, they updated the software of my vehicle at the BMW official service and tried to diagnose the problem, but no problem was detected. They said that there was no mechanical problem in the vehicle and that the problem might be related to the vehicle's brain, that the electronic brain needed to be replaced and parts were ordered. They said it could be replaced under warranty, but I hope they can find a solution this time.

I had a problem this week with the 2020 G20 I purchased a month ago from my local dealership, the parking brake was stuck on and couldn't be released. Lots of amber "P" warnings on the dash, could select F and R drive modes but the rear wheels were locked by the brakes. Had car flat-bed towed to the dealership.
Solution was to perform a software upgrade' Zero cost since the car still has 6 months factory warranty |

Hello everyone, I am new here. I seem to have the same issue with my g20 from 2019. I can only deactivate the parking brake, not activate it. (It activates itself when Auto Hold is on) A new shifter module costs, €800+ VAT. The bmw dealer doesn't sell the button only, I don't see a physical issue with the button though. ( can be bought from Ali exprss for +-€15).Anyone an idea, or somebody with the same issue that has been solved? Thanks

That won’t fix the problem though.. I’m almost certain this is a system glitch. I can’t update because I’m tuned.. If I update then I will need bench unlock. |

Hello, I bought a 2nd hand shifter module, replaced it, and it works fine now. No coding needed, no error messages. The old button wasn't making a 'clicking' noise when activating the handbrake, so probably an internal error or the previous owner pushed a little too hard. Greetings

Hi guys. Just to add another similar event to the forum. Mine is a 330e from 2019, 80000km (50000 miles), and the Parking Button problem started just a couple of days ago. I had to use the Auto Hold as soon as I noticed the problem, as I was parked, and the car just wouldn't deactivate the Parking function so I couldn't move. But fortunately, there's the Auto H workaround...
Just adding some additional info to the 330e experience so far: the car has been absolutely flawless for 4 years. Just the regular tires, oil and filter changes, and it just worked well, always, zero problems. But.... in the beginning of the year (like 6 months ago), the interior LED lights stopped working, first on the passenger zone, then on the elbow/interior handles.... and after a few weeks no more colored LEDs all around the car interior and feet zone, just on the center console. And now this issue with the Parking button... This is a leased company car, with 6 more months on the contract, so at this point I just don't care that much... But I was keen on replacing this one with a new 330e, and now I am not so sure!! |

Let me chime in on this thread as well.... I have a 2023 G80 M3 (Manual) with only 5,800mi and had the same issue this past week (twice) and I am waiting for the diagnosis.
The first time it happened, I actually called BMW Roadside and they were able to remotely reset my DSC Module as they saw there was an error code with the power going to the parking brake. Once they restarted it, all was good again. But fast forward a few days and it happened again and this time the remote reset did not work.
