M340i front left suspension clunk - 8/26 UPDATE
On my ‘20 M340 with adaptive suspension, I sometimes hear a “clunking” noise when slowly driving over a speed bump.
The dealer put it on a rack and said nothing appears loose. When the noise occurs, I not only hear the clunk but feel a slight vibration through the steering wheel. Has anyone else heard a noise like this in their car? |

Same here with my ‘19 320i without adaptive suspension. Clunking noise appears when starting the car every morning and slowly driving a speed bump or on a bumpy road. Went to the dealer a month ago and had both of the front wishbones replaced however the clunking noise comes back on the second day after replacement. Have to schedule another time slot to the dealer and get this fixed again.

It also happens mostly on lowered F8X cars too. I currently have this, although mild, on my M2. Thankfully my G20 is quiet. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1149998 https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...057&page=3 |

I have the "clunk" too. Left front, very noticeable on a cold start when stopping and accelerating at stop signs. As the weight shifts to/from the front-end, I can hear and feel the clunk. But it also happens at other times, during normal driving.
Surprisingly, it doesn't happen when going over speed bumps. I'm debating on whether I should take it in now or wait until the next scheduled oil change in a couple of months. |

Touch wood I don't have this but I did have it on my F20 (M140i). And I wasn't the only one. Sounds very familiar.
The comment about the F30 reminded me that we looked at all sorts on babybmw forum. Came down to either new steering rack, top mount or a loose bolt on the steering rack. Info below: BMW eventually brought out a fix for the steering rack. Impacted both left or right sides. For me, initially the steering rack bolt was loose. Had it tightened, steering improved and noise was quieter but not gone. Then my top mount exploded at 70mph on the motorway. Managed to get her to a BMW dealer nearby. They fixed under warranty and no noise ever again so was defo the top mount. Ironically I had taken her in 2 days before for them to check it. BMW said it's fine. https://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewto...4&t=110735

I have this too. 2020 320i.
I've replaced the OE springs with H&R so assumed it was down to this. Guess I can't exactly take it to the dealer for a fix given I've messed with the springs!? |

UPDATE:
My dealer discovered today that BMW issued service bulletin SIB 34-06-20 in June to address the complaint that "noise from the dynamic stability Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) can be heard when driving rapidly over speed bumps." The bulletin instructs dealers to update the DSC Control (CTRL) program on x-drive G20 vehicles produced between October 2018 & June 2019. Mine was produced outside those dates, but apparently the dealer believes it may may correct the problem in my car, too. My guess is that BMW may have revised the original DSC programming so that driving over speed bumps will no longer trigger the DSC and create a slight knocking sensation that can be felt up through the steering column. To be clear, my car only made the noise intermittently when driving slowly over speed bumps, so time will tell if the revised programming works. |

Had the same issue two days ago and I don't have the adaptive suspension. Brought the car to the dealer and they said it was the strut. Now I have to wait for 3-5 weeks for the new strut to come.

I have adaptive suspension and I lowered my car and it just recently started making this noise, should I take the suspension off and take it to the dealership? I feel like theyd blame it on my suspension and void warranty.
It doesn't bother me that much, but I'm just worried it might be affecting something that I'm not aware of.

I've got a 330 and having a similar issue with knocking... car is lowered on HR springs and I'm equally concerned that they will void my suspension warranty. Has anyone had success getting this fixed while being lowered?

I made an account just to post this but thanks for making me realise I'm not going crazy and making it up.
I've took my 2018 320d into BMW 3 times and mentioned this clunk and been told each time that the car is fine, they can't replicate the clunk and that it's "a characteristic of the car". It didn't always do it so I know something isn't right and like someone else said, it's happening more now it's warmer outside. I feel the clunk when I'm braking or accelerating (especially when stop/start kicks in) but also sometimes when I'm steering, not so much over speedbumps. I'm not a massive car person and I'm a bit stumped with what to do next if BMW literally won't help me? My warranty is up in September so I want to get it sorted before then if it's something that is covered. |

Having a similar issue on my 2021 M440i. Here is my best attempt at recording the noise that's coming from the left front. Is this similar to what you all are also experiencing?
Any insight would be helpful! Have a service appointment in 2 weeks, that was the first appointment they had with a loaner vehicle available. |

I’ve just started hearing this as well. It feels like front right same side as steering (I’m right hand drive - UK). It’s only over tiny bumps I hear it. I do have adaptive suspension.
I’m about a 7hr drive from home. I suspect it’ll be ok until then? It’s not a stop moving the car type thing, is it? |

I have a 2021 G20 330i M Sport with AS and I just started hearing it about 8k miles in from a brand new car. Going to the dealership on Thursday to see what they say. It clunks the most when you are turning and going over a small bump. It makes me feel like I'm driving a new york taxicab....so not cool.
...on an unrelated note: my car ALSO pulls to the left. This car doesn't seem to want to go straight on the highway. It's very busy to stay tracked. |

My October 2019 G20M340i had the same issue - (started knocking April/May 2021). Mileage was 11,000 miles and the knock came from front left side and low down (sounded the same as your video clip - a very distinctive knock!). Didn't do it on a regular basis; eventually after a spirited drive - the car was 'hot' - on returning home after 2 hours of continuous driving it knocked consistently every couple of hundred yards. My dash cameras picked up the sound and this allowed my local BMW service department to hear the noise. Dealer couldn't replicate but asked me for the dashcam MP4 files which were sent to BMW UK. Within 24 hours BMW UK responded with "change the steering rack". This was completed last week (24th June 2021) and so far after 200/250 miles the knock has gone!
