Brake pad AND rotor replacement
My dealership just told me my pads are at 4-5mm and should be replaced as soon as possible and that the rotors should be done at the same time. I don't know if they measured the rotors specifically, but is it normal to do both together, or do rotors usually have a longer life than the pads?

The rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on them. If measured below that, they should be replaced. Even TIS says this. They don't necessarily need to be replaced at the same time. I don't see people turning rotors anymore either, FWIW.
I think shops recommend this to one, make more money, and two, to cut down on rework if people complain about vibrations, etc. I pad slap all the time (track my car, and replacing rotors every time would be $$$), and I've had zero noticeable ill-effects from it. But I'm also swapping pads often and I don't really care if they're not wearing "properly". It's worth considering though, but it's not required. Looks like you have a 330i, so rotors are cheaper than the M340i. |
