Demo Video: BMW NFC Key Card

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Description from an earlier post on the new Comfort Access @ https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1515003

Another great feature of Comfort Access is known as Smart Access. A spare keycard can be added to a vehicle when its equipped with Comfort Access, which will enable the driver not to carry the keyfob at all. Once paired, the keycard can be held up to NFC reader on the driver's door handle to unlock the car, and placed in the center console to start the engine.

seems like it would be more work to use the keycard.

take keycard out to scan door for entry, and place in center console to start car.

vs.

put key in pocket, profit.

I know which one I prefer...

They need to split the difference and make it so the card can stay in wallet and function the same as current key to make this viable imo. But that has some technological hurdles that comes with it

I assume this is like Jaguar/LR's Activity Key in that its waterproof and can be used in situations where the key would be an inconvenience like swimming

Not understanding how this is an advancement of the key fob. I don't need to take the key out of my pocket now. But with this I do?

They already have the activity key thing. They displayed it for the x4. Not sure why they're making this too

This! I feel like its a waste of a technology, using the key which you can leave in your pocket is way more convenient. Also if I am going to pull something out of my pocket I would rather it be my phone.

This would have been cool a few years ago, but it is really already obsolete due to smart phones.

Yeah this doesn't seem better to me. My key never leaves my pocket. I never think about it. Never worry about losing it cause if it drops I hear it, but I've seen too many people drop credit cards and not even know it happened. And let's say the card's in my wallet and I'm in an area I'd rather not be in, it becomes risky business. This isn't the way to go. Yet anyways... Stay tuned for a few years

Would work much better if the card never left your wallet.

Keyless seems to be much better even though you still have a key in your pocket.

It's like something got lost in translation here. Someone had the great idea (or more likely, stole Tesla's idea) to have a credit card key. Something that could stay in the wallet. But the stay in the wallet part never got comprehended. So now it's just one more mostly useless, confusing feature put out by BMW recently.

The whole point of comfort access is to not have to dig around for your keys. Be it an actual key or facsimile of one

Well that's another tesla thing that BMW is adopting. Model 3 has the exact same deal, even up to the point of placing the card on the center console to start the vehicle. Worked so well for Tesla that now they are offering real keys again. LOL

Main problem may be your wallet blocking the signal. Which is becoming more and more of an issue with the shielding that's now being incorporated into many wallets to prevent electronic theft methods.

Yeah this seems like a pain in the ass. What the hell is the point of it if it's not always in your wallet? I don't have to touch my fob to the door handle or cradle it in the wireless charger!

OMG, really??
Let's go back to normal keys then where you have to press the button. Same thing, you have to take it out off your pocket or purse.
Why do you need to be that close to the door handle???
It's good idea as long as you can do it like with the keys we have now!!!
