If you do big miles then it makes sense. If you don't then as they say, the petrol is prob the better choice.

Having said that, having had BM i6 diesels from 1996-2018, I love the torque. So that might be an attractive factor, though 500nm in the petrol isn't too bad, just not 700nm that the diesel has. Of course mpg......!!

Think my main reason not to go 40d is that I'm a cash buyer and would be concerned about local government's incessant attacks on diesel.

Ditto, as i've said before if i was doing more towing or big miles i'd have gone for the M340d but i'm very happy with my M340i

Guys, it was simply a review. I haven't seen many (if any) video reviews of the 40D engined cars. Nice to see other opinions.

It wasn't posted to slight the M440i.

Vive la difference.

This is the best £50k package available on sale today! BMW M340d Touring

Headline from a Joe Achilles yes auto review of the m340 D

Apologies but can’t seem to add link or drop in video but for those interested search Joe Achilles yes auto BMW m340 D touring review and it should show.

Edit….. https://www.yesauto.co.uk/content/vi...touring-106742

Just on the above, I have driven both petrol and diesel and loved both, just in different ways

Petrol….great car ,unfortunately the car I tested seemed to want to change gears up and down too frequently for my liking, like it was hedging it’s bets on what it thought I wanted…the oomph was there, the ride was spot on but not for me.Maybe because I do most of my driving on wyndy Scottish B roads

Diesel, and the car I am waiting on…loved the 700 nm of torque, just effortless for an everyday driver.
A hefty old beast though and I found it noticeable from the petrol version
Obviously the range and mpg for me was a big selling point. I don’t do huge miles but when I do the diesel makes sense. My sensible choice

Horses for courses and no right or wrong choices ….unless you pick the wrong one

Not sure anyone was taking the M340d review as a slight towards the petrol.

Personally I still wonder whether I made a mistake going i rather than d, but reassure myself that there is no wrong answer with these two.

If I leased (something I hate the idea of so a bit of a moot point) then I would've considered the d more seriously, as when legislation idiotically hammers it, it might not be such a proposition.

And mileage. I'll do about 10k a year in it so am happy with petrol. I used to do 30k+ a year, and if I still did, then it'd be d all the way.

Two great cars that go about their business in a different way, no right or wrong just one will suit folks better than the other depending on needs and circumstances.

No idea what’s in store for diesel or petrol going forward in the next few years at least, likely both will see increases in tariffs and taxes as we phase ICE out….

The diesel makes most sense as a daily or if you’re not bothered about having a drivers car.. If I had a hot batch or a 911 too then I’d have one.

For a one car solution the petrol is the way to go, more fun to chuck about, more engaging, fun to rev out and quite a bit faster.

I might be totally wrong, but diesel engines are easier/cheaper to convert to hydrogen. Not that I think that will be an option for quite some time, and not sure anyone would want to either.

I suspect that yes, ICE will get expensive, but without a workable alternative..... A lot of legislation seems to come out of London, where let's face it, the integrated public transport system means most don't need a car. But for those of us who have no public transport to speak of, things are very different.
