So it's basically an electrified version of the 4 Series Concept? Am I missing anything here?

Is there a reason why electric cars always look awkward and ugly?

Why can't electric cars look identical to combustion cars, minus a few exhaust tips?

There are some good looking EV's, although the list is very short. Audi E-Tron (not the sportback), Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan and Jaguar I-Pace. These are the only ones that come to my mind though, not many and they're all $70k+!

I'd say the Audi E-Tron is the least weird looking EV and pretty much matches up with other Audi's. The Mini Cooper EV could also be added, although the regular ICE Cooper is pretty quirky as it is, but the two don't have too many design differentiations between them.

- unnecessary big kidneys on the exterior
- hood line will be there
- sadly no Hoftmeister kink
- Mercedes-Benz interior with those two ‘sticking out’ screens.

Why is so difficult for them to do easy things right?

This concept car looks fine to me.
But remember, the real thing is gonna be ugly, like those leaked photos of 4 series coupe we saw.

Why does an EV need a grill at all. Much less that hideously ugly abomination.

This is definitely more of a grand tourer, than an actual grand coupe.

I really hope the new 4er grill looks more like this than the renders we've had so far.

Also really digging diffusers in place of exhausts. It fills that space nicely compared to the blank bumpers of current EVs.

I'm really hoping this can be priced somewhere near 3er prices (lower end *fingers-crossed*).

This is also my biggest hope and worry for the i4. People can argue as much as they want about Tesla quality, style, materials, etc. But the Model 3 in my opinion is quite a good value price wise, and when it comes to electric cars, Tesla is the gold standard, and they have the biggest benefits (range, tech, superchargers, etc.)

Hopefully the i4 will not only succeed in range, charging abilities, battery tech, and more, but hopefully it won't be priced too high, although tax/government credits should help out.

Although I do worry, if this car is coming out in late 2021 (thats if its on time) what will Tesla do/update by then?

They can look identical but really you'd want your EV to be designed as such from the beginning. The EVs that are just electrified versions of ICE cars are compromised from the start since the architecture for EV differs a good bit from that of ICE.

The Taycan and Model S, for example, are good-looking EVs, IMO, that look like normal ICE cars but were designed around EV architecture so they make the most of the design space.

Stop crying people. This car will look, drive and sell very good. It looks very very promising. The grill it's starting to grow on me. It doesn't kill me but I don't hate it either. I think in person it'll look very good. This is shaping to be a true Tesla rival at last.

Probably saves money to not redesign everything. Also why shouldn't it look like an ICE car? People like ICE cars, they don't really like goofy Jetson looking pod cars. No one looks at the i3 and thinks it looks better than that generation 3 series. The garage styling of electric cars is part of the reason people are not interested in them. It's something Tesla got right.

Well, maybe, but remember, we're still in concept form. We have yet to see official production spec, price, battery tech or even get official numbers from the EPA, just promises. We won't know until the car is physically available to drive and buy whether it will be good or successful.

Agree. And I remain a skeptic on those factors but I can see this shaping to be a very good alternative. Remember the i3 is now nearly 8 years old. I can only imagine that the tech is a few years better than what it was with the i3. I owned an i3 and never had an issue with the tech.

Tesla is a different beast since it's very progressive on software updates while BMW remains stuck with its legacy ways.

Agree 100% on the package needs of an EV being different than ICE, allowing for the design to be optimized differently. Our brains are programmed by years of experience to expect automotive proportions to look a certain way because of the needs of ICE.

I think the other part of the design challenge for EVs is right now they are not mainstream and typically premium priced so they need to be designed in a way that stands out so their status as something special will be immediately recognizable

It looks nice, with a couple of exceptions:

The rear panel window looks a bit weird, a Hoffmeister kink would've been better there.

And then there's the grille. It's awful! Like hitting your mother over the head with a hammer on Mother's Day awful... And it detracts from an otherwise solid effort. I don't understand why BMW is trying to get into the big grille game now (and doing such a piss-poor job of it). Audi's been at it since the mid 2000s. It just seems derivative and non-genuine (whatever the word for that might be; insincere, perhaps?). They should've just gone with a sleeker, smaller, classier interpretation of their twin kidneys.
