Has anyone done a 330e acceleration test using just the gas engine?
I'm curious if anyone has depleted the battery and did any acceleration tests on the gas engine?
With only 184hp and around 350 lb. heavier than a 330i, I'm a little concerned it'll lack the power for me, especially coming from my E92 335i. I'm sure it's a great commuter car since it's relatively flat terrain for my commute to work. But, when I go skiing/etc. up the mountain, I'm driving approx. 75 miles from 300 ft elevation to 7,000 ft elevation. I imagine that, when pushing that tank up the mountain with only 184hp, I would have to keep the accelerator floored compared to my current car. Thoughts? |

Normally, BMW saves enough usable power that you always will have electric boost. BUT driving up a 75 mile mountain, I am not so sure.
I can tell you that I have passed cars on a 65 mph road on a steep uphill (a two lane road where they put in a passing lane on the hill) withplenty of left over capacity in my 530e but I have not driven straight up a steep hill for 75 miles. You might have identified the only scenario where one can run out of boost. |

I’ve done 5000kms now and never found it lacking in terms of power. It’s a pretty fast car. When you put your foot down it fairly shifts. I don’t get anything like the claimed electric range but power is not an issue.

I've not driven the 330e but BMW had 530es at the ultimate driving event a few years ago for the cone course. they all had no charge and the car felt very sluggish.... granted a 5 is another 200-300 lbs on a 3 series but I'd guess a 330e with no charge is not going to be particularly fast going up hill

But because you are turning the car on and off 4 times during work you're not gonna get that long. |

Thanks for all the responses, I figured it would be lacking in power driving to the mountains... But, driving to work it should be a great commuter car, plus I can drive it in the car pool lane and get home a little faster. I'll have to use my wife's 535d if I head to the mountains, it has tons of torque and is a great highway cruiser.

In f30 330e, it never lets the battery charge to go below 6%, to make sure you have the extra boost from electric motor available at all times. I would assume same goes for g20 330e, so i dont see how this would affect power output.

I understand the electric engine will even get power from gas. The 252CV are supposed to be always with you. Only the extra 40CV are limited to 10secs and a min % of battery load

Yes, you can charge the electric engine from petrol engine, although its not very efficient. In f30 330e, if the electric charge drops too low, the petrol engine will automatically charge it up to around 15%.
