BMW changes from Nov 2020

Interesting article showing the changes that are coming for the G20 and others from November 2020.

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/globa...EN?language=en

This includes Urban Cruise Control for cars built after July 2020.

through combined speed and distance control will also be available in numerous current BMW models when driving in city traffic from autumn 2020 onwards. In conjunction with the optional Driving Assistant Professional, the Urban Cruise Control function is available in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 8 Series and the BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW M5, BMW M8, BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M model series. It extends the range of functions of the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function by a traffic light recognition function. In addition to vehicles and traffic signs ahead, traffic lights registered by the stereo camera are also taken into account.

In the case of traffic light signals that are clearly related to the lane you are travelling, these are automatically registered by the speed and distance control system. If the traffic light is red, the system decelerates the vehicle to a standstill. A green light signals the continuation of the journey. In a more complex intersection situation where, for example, different light signals apply to different lanes, a traffic light symbol is displayed in the instrument cluster. The driver can then confirm the light signal shown there and continue to use the automatic speed and distance control or control the speed himself. For additional comfort in city traffic there is a drive reminder function. While stationary at a traffic light, the current traffic light phase is displayed in the instrument cluster; at the beginning of the green phase, the driver also receives a signal to start driving.

The Urban Cruise Control function can also be integrated into the car at a later date by means of a Remote Software Upgrade. With the exception of the BMW 8 Series models, this option is available for vehicles of all the above-mentioned series produced from July 2020 onwards and which are equipped with the Driving Assistant Professional.

I don't get why Urban Cruise control can't be added as a software upgrade to 2019 models. Its just software recognizing traffic lights. Tesla recently did this to all their cars.

I know is rather frustrating that we can't have it. I do wonder if however it could be unlocked via coding.

Tesla have more HW/SW control over their platform than most of the 'traditional' OEMs - some of whom remain locked in by their Tier 1 suppliers, have a load more complexity and a procurement led approach to engineering as a result.

It is thoroughly disappointing that expensive products < 6mths appear to be left behind.... Whilst I didn't buy the M340 for it's tech/SW it'll pi$$ me off nonetheless as more SW-centric features arrive and either aren't compatible or BMW can't be bothered to validate against earlier car builds.....

So you have to buy a new car if you want the new stuff?

Personally I know a few people with Tesla’s. I wouldn’t necessarily hold them up as an example, they are buggier than a buggy thing from a software POV!

This is outrageous and i can't understand why BMW are only making UCC available to new cars from Nov2020.... surely the "new" car has the same things that my 2019 has.. so why!!

Tesla as an example of an automotive that delivers multiple updates to new/existing fleet ≠ suggestion that said updates are bug-free

Agreed, I have a feeling the MobileEye software (which controls all the autonomous features) can't be updated via Remote Software Upgrade.

You shouldn't need to buy a new car for new software updates, the same way you don't need to buy a new phone for new software features.
