Charging Tray Overheats Phone

Hi,

I have a 2020 M340 and it came with a wireless charging tray (also doubles as NFC sensor); I also have a Samsung S8.

Recently, when I put my phone in the charging tray, the blue light comes on, BUT after 5-10 minutes the light turns orange & my phone gets quite warm. I've done this with and without the phone's Samsung Flip case and still get the same resultant problem. When I had the car in for some other things at my local dealer, I asked them to check things out and they claim there's nothing wrong with the charger and that if there was too much voltage coming from it, a fuze would have been tripped.

Any ideas as to what is causing the overheating (and loss in battery life)?

Appreciate your thoughts and recommendations!

hmm no issues with apple phones I know of. ill have to ask the service guys (a few use samsung) if they have seen or heard any issues

has this always been the case or did it just recently start doing it? you state recently, what was happening before? I agree that there would have been a fuze trip if it was getting too much. Could it be the phone itself?

I have no issues with my iPhone XS, but it does get uncomfortably warm.

Far hotter than when using any standalone wires less chargers I have.

Definitely concerned about possible battery life reduction due to temperature. If there was some cooling via the A/C in the tray it would help.

My Galaxy heats up even when I use the official wireless charger for my desk. Which is why I stopped using it and prefer a wired charger.

My iPhone 11Pro gets really warm when using the wireless charger. I've stopped using it because I'm sure it is detrimental to the battery of the phone. Instead I use a short USB A to lightening cable and mount my phone on a phone holder that slot into the cup holder.

I think I've seen the charge light turn amber once. And I assumed it was because the charger was overheating and self shut off for the time being.

Well this charger is useless anywas, it's just a measly 5W charger which also overheats so I just use the 15W type c in the armrest.
Only use I've found is for wireless earplugs.

I've found it to be great especially if you're using maps. Not only is the battery not drained when you are done your route, but there's usually a few % increase in battery life. Sure it's not super quick, but it's better than nothing especially given wireless CarPlay.

For the record, my phone has gotten warming when using maps but never hot.

My old Note 10 Plus would always trigger an orange light after 10-15 minutes of charging. I haven't tried the Note 20 Ultra yet.

Yes. My iPhone 11 gets hot in the charging tray. And the charging is slow AF. That said, as someone pointed out, at least on long drives you can use Carplay and everything else full time and not drain your phone.

Yes, it’s well known, this wireless charger is F’ing useless. I charge my iPhone XR and now 12 Pro with a USB C cable from the centre console. Annoying.

I use a phone mount that's slot into the cup holder and got a short USB A to lightening cable to charge the phone from the USB port in between the cup holders.

I primarily use plug in charger. My S9 does heat up too when using wireless charger. It's a good place to keep your sunglasses 😎

No issues with our M340i snd our Google Pixel 3 and 4 phones. Both charge correctly using the tray, and after about 30 mins only get warm. I have never had the orange led light come on.

With my Samsung S10 in my M340i I've had overheating problems from the minute I drove the car off the dealer's lot. The phone overheats and the light turns red and stops charging within minutes anytime I use it. Same with my wife's S9. Agree with others that this thing is useless...at least for Samsung phones.

I have no problems with wireless charging at home, which I do every night.

I have a Galaxy Note 10 Plus and yes the wireless charger warms up my phone within few minutes and the LED turns Orange, but just leave it there after few minutes the phone will start charging again. I guess it has to do something with Samsung phones (ofcourse my samsung wireless charger works fine), but the phone will cool down and then start charging back in few minutes. Hopefully the new Samsung phones does not have this same issue.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 12 Pro. It gets really hot and sometimes the light will turn orange.

People talk about how phones will get hot with any wireless charger--this is not the same. I use a wireless charger at home and the phone gets warm, but no where near this hot.

My car doesn't have the wireless charging, but iPhone 11 Pro Max gets very hot sitting in that area. The centre console also gets warm on driver side (between the seat base and knee pad)

Exactly. I charge my phone nightly on a wireless charger and it barely gets warm. On a couple hour drive with Waze and carplay my charge turned orange and both the phone and the charging tray were quite hot.

It doesn't really seem like a workable solution unless you're not really using your phone in the charge tray.

You may have found the crux of the problem. I _don't_ really use my phone when it is on the wireless charger at home. I do when it's in my car. It might be worth an experiment with having it play music or run a navigation app when on the home charger to see if that works better.

I also wonder if this is due to coil alignment problems--the charging tray is a little hard to reach to "perfectly" position the phone, and it may move around due to acceleration.

Yeah there's definitely some additive effect. It'll get warm just using GPS, but adding in charging and then the compartment not being well ventilated... I think that's some of it.

I'm still rocking the Note8, and now I've noticed that after 30 or so minutes the phone gets warm and the tray flashes orange.
I really wished whoever was in charge of this development would have included some kind of ventilator or a different design to include more ventilation.

Has anyone found a resolution to this issue with the iPhone overheating? I have an iPhone Xs and find the wireless charging pad nearly useless with it. On longer drives it overheats and then CarPlay drops. If I want to use Waze, I need to keep the phone plugged in. Even on shorter drives the charging connection is not steady. I might find some rubberized spacers to place either side of the tray to keep the phone centered, as the charging connection drops it the phone slides around at all.

In my previous G30 540i the phone would occasionally overheat on long drives in areas with poor cellular service. With the G20 it is a constant annoyance.
