First HDR shots with the D300S

I recently upgraded my D40 to a D300S as the D40 didn't do bracketing (at least without a ton of button pushing and a tripod).

With the D300S I can take 5 shots in under a second hand held minimizing movement (edit - I forgot to click 'align images' in the program lol).

Here are my first three attempts (ever) at tonemapping an HDR. I literally slapped them together in a few mins. I love cloudy days lol. I can't wait to do some better ones when I have time to figure the program out.

I think you overdid HDR-ing your pictures.

Im pretty sure HDR pictures are not supposed to look like you made them with colored pencils and crayons. Using the HDR process should be used when lighting isnt optimal and you are just trying to get an even flow of lighting across the whole photo instead of blowing out certain areas of a photo.

An HDR photo is supposed to still resemble a photo, not a painting or drawing.

Right, HDRs reduce blown out highlights while adding details in shadows.

stop using the grunge presets and play around with settings until the subject is visually appealing...your HDR is way overdone

Yeah yeah I know they're overdone lol - I just used the presets since I had zero time and I really liked the effect. Frankly, from what I have seen, it is exactly what people are using these programs for. Just do a google image search for HDR Photography.

It is a free open source program called 'qtpfsgui' (for real). It has about 8 or 9 different methods for Tone Mapping an HDR. I just picked the first one. I kinda like the effect but of course you can tone it down lol but you can get some really cool effects with it.

There is an option in there to align the three/five/seven raw files (TIFF actually) - I did not use it but the results when you do are really good.

I figured you used the preset...GRUNGE in photomatix will give you the same results. Play around with it a bit and fine tune your pix, they'll turn out great.

check these out...some of the best I've seen

Ok, played around with it for a bit. This one is a little better. Slightly over saturated.

No Grunge lol.
