I've been asking this for awhile but does that mean the iX3 is two wheel drive only? Because it's DOA if that's the case.
Most likely one motor at the front (120 to 160kW) and one on the back (150-180kW). It's is much easier to implement AWD with electric motors because the motors are much smaller.

My guess is iX3 will be AWD.

It says in the press release the iX3 will only have one motor, not one on each axle. So assuming the press release isn't wrong and there aren't two motors, then either one motor is driving all four wheels, or the car is RWD only. Any of the BMW whisperers in here have any idea?

It is incredibly quiet yet very swift. Not as swift as my i3rex but definitely surprising.

Yup. Just look at the current NSX. Although it works better with the gas engine in the back.

The light at the end of the tunnel.

This is a bright ray of light for a brighter M future. Why on earth did they not use it to power the M Next Concept!?!

That is wonderful but is suggest they use the benchmarks for performance to apply to the dedicated M model instead of the i8 2.0 drivetrain solution.

Sounds too good to be true for now, but then Tesla is a fact and I would love to see this as an option.

Don't forget BMW have also just announced that their electrification plans have been sped up so the announced at least 25 electrified models in teh product portfolio will be available two years earlier than previously announced: by the end 2023 instead by the end of 2025.

And more than half of the models will be BEVs - so 13 at least BEVs in the BMW Group portfolio by the end of 2023. Currently there's just one: the BMW i3. MINI SE on the way in 2019, iX3 in 2020, iNext and i4 in 2021. So at least another 8 BEV models then in the next 2 years - in 2022 and 2023. That's BEV galore!

And be sure a "Power BEV" model will be among them - but not necessary in 5er Sedan form. As well as a model with "Power PHEV" powertrain as showcased in BMW Vision M Next - but not necessary as a supercar.

And they have also announced the expectation of electrified vehicles annual sales growth of +30% in average by 2025. Meaning BMW Group will hit the annual sales of BEVs and PHEVs of approx 1 million units by 2025.

What will be future of tuning for these cars? You connect your laptop's battery to the center console plug to give yourself an extra 5hp? :

And this is why I waited for the Germans on this one.

While shopping around for my last car, I looked at a couple of Tesla's. Don't get me wrong. They are good cars overall and offer an immense amount of innovation, but the build quality was to put it lightly.....piss poor.

Cheap materials, poor quality control and based upon opinions of a close friend, piss poor handling. Sure they go fast in a straight line, but anyone can do this.

BMW, Mercedes, VAG are now on the bandwagon and it's just a matter of time before we see them dominating the roads.

For now I'm sticking to my diesel, but there's no doubt, in 5 years, I'll be driving a 5phev or perhaps even a full ev.

An M550e would be a hybrid, no?

If a car like the one in the OP were produced, I would expect it to be called "i5" or perhaps "i5 M" since there would no doubt be other i5 models below it with considerably less power.

The superiority of electric drive has been known for decades. It has always been limited battery capacity that made it useful only for things like forklifts and golf carts rather than automotive applications until recently.

And don't underestimate the fun aspect. It's different but definitely very refreshing and joyful. On the contrary, the annoying gear switching of the ICE is nothing I want ever have in an everyday car.

Still, it must be considered that Lithium extraction is a big mess and waste and therefore already old tech. The game will change dramatically with new solid state batteries which are supposed to be ready around 2025. The characteristics of this type of battery is completely different in terms of capacity and charging times. It is not so bad electrification will have its mass breakthrough only then. Time to build more wind power farms and solar power stations.
