Swirl Marks after the first Hand Wash?

I took delivery of my car ab out 2 weeks ago. After its first wash I noticed some swirl marks all over the car. Most noticeable on the hood.

My Tanzanite Blue was extra option. The Detailer said that this is common upon taking delivery of cars. Sometimes these marks are hidden before taking delivery. And after the first wash you can see everything.

Now I will need a color correction. What do you guys think? Should I have the dealer take of this?

Bummer! Sorry to hear this happened to you. Would you mind posting some pics so others know what to look out for? I should have a TB coming next week and now I'm concerned...

Tanzanite Blue is a very soft paint. If you have even the slightest contaminants on your wash cloth or drying towel or didn't put enough water it will swirl. Tanzanite needs a lot of care to look good for a long time.

I clay barred, polished and then ceramic coated my Tanzite M4 when it was a few days old. I am very careful about washing it and periodically put a layer of Zymol Carbon wax on the car,
So far, so good.

My black Jaguar XK had swirl marks. The car was pristine in all other respects when I got it but I suspect the previous owner ran it through automatic car washes. I clayed it and them polished it with Meguiars 505 polish and then put several coats of Meguiars black wax.

Exactly happened to my Tanzanite Blue G20, didn't notice the swirls on delivery. Only in direct sunlight Was really upset, so went to anotherplace to for external wash and speed polish.

Note to share and to self, just because a detailer has good reviews on google or yelp doesn't mean the process will be done well or to high detail standard.

Thank goodness for professional Youtube videos as I am a weekend warrior. With the same amount of money you could of purchased the beginner/professional Orbital polisher, pads and polish gel to get started..

Ok, so it seems to be a common thing. I wonder if dealers are doing this. I'm sure not on purpose.

Any advice on this? Should I ask dealer not to prep the car for delivery (no wash, wax, etc) and do it myself? Did anyone bring their cars with swirl marks back to dealer and get them to address the problem?

Would be great to avoid the problem in the first place, though, if possible.

I had to reschedule my appointment. I'm taking it in next week. I'll update on how it goes

Sorry to hear about the swirl marks on your new car. I’m sure its really disappointing, but they are definitively removable.

The swirl marks are in the clear coat, which is on top of the paint. I would not think that the color of the paint would really matter. If the swirl marks go down to the actual paint - those would be some deep swirls and definitely require a professional to remove, wet sand, repaint including adding clear coat.

I use a 6” random orbital (from Griot’s Garage) and some Chemical Guys VSS to remove swirl marks. There are a ton of great YouTube videos on how to gently remove swirl marks. It takes the right tools and some patience - but anybody can do it.

Another tip is when you hand wash, use two buckets and a grit guards. One bucket is for some and another is for rinse off the grit after each use on the car. Also, use a separate microfiber sponge for the bottom part of the car - which gets the most dirt.

It’s easily removable. If you do not feel comfortable or don’t have the time - a good detail shop will be able to help.

Good luck!

I just picked my Portimao blue car up yesterday, less than 40 miles on it as it sits in my parking garage. I was planning to put CQuartz UK 3.0 on it today, I went down with some IPA diluted to 20% and on the first spray and wipe down in a test area I noticed tons of 'holographic' swirl marks all over the car. I stopped thinking I could have been putting them into the paint with the IPA solution and the microfiber even though that doesn't sound plausible. After seeing this I am guessing it's got something to do with the port processing of the cars. I am very, very disappointed that I now need to waste a ton of time and money buying a polisher and all this other stuff to undo the damage done by someone. I wonder if there is a way to get the dealer or BMW NA to pay for the paint correction?

I am going to call up The Skys The Limit on Monday where I bought all my Carpro supplies to see if they have any suggestions...

How about you guys? Can a MF cloth and IPA mixture introduce swirl marks? I am guessing that the IPA is removing the wax that was covering up the swirl marks and thats why I am seeing them now?

Dealers don't give a shit about properly washing a car. Even at high end places. If you really care about it get it delivered with the transport wax still on and take it straight to a detailer for the day. Probably won't cost more than whatever random paint protection the dealer was going to throw at it from 10ft away before wiping it off with 50grit anyway.

For reference, don't let dealership prep the car upon delivery. Most will unwrap vehicle carelessly and will drive your car through their automatic car washes with brushes. If they don't have automatic car wash, there is a high chance the dealership will do an improper job washing. Take it straight to reputable detail shop or DIY at home using proper washing and drying techniques.

You only have one chance. Make it clear to your sale associate/delivery specialist.
