Just finished audio upgrades..

So I had the Bavsound complete speaker and Ghost Subwoofers upgrades installed in my G20 the instant I got it as I had this same setup in my 2017 (F30) with the Bavsound Revenant Amp and it was the best sounding system I have ever had. Unfortunately for the G20 Bavsound doesn't offer an amp upgrade and without the amp it's seriously lacking even with all the upgraded speakers and subs. It's definitely improved over the oem setup bit nothing like my F30 with the amp. Bavsound told me that an amp for the G20 ain't gonna happen and they told me Bimmertech's UP8 is the best possible pnp amp for my car. OK but the UP8 is veryyyy expensive. At around $1,700 for the amp and the necessary cables (which I feel should come with the amp since they are absolutely necessary) this amp is a lot more than the Bavsound. But after checking out their site and a lot of reviews I was sold. Especially since so many people made such bold claims that this amp coupled with all upgraded speakers and subs will not only be comparable to the G20 Harmon Kardon system but actually surpass it! Wow. My wife's G20 has the HK system and the sound that comes from that cars audio is a dream. But forget surpassing it...even comparable I'll easily pay $1,700. So I got the amp last night, which came from Dubai which I thought was really cool, and spent an hour or so installing it. My F30 Bavsound amp was truly PnP but I wouldn't necessarily call the UP8 PnP. You need to remove stock amp and attach it to a bracket they supply and re-install it in another spot after you install the UP8 in the original spot. Installation and instructions were very simple. Most of your time will be spent removing trim etc. Anyway without any fine tuning and without finishing the coding process which I'm not sure if that improves sound quality but based off the sound I got right after the UP8 was installed you can definitely tell the difference in the lows, bass, etc. That was evident almost instantly. If anything the bass my hit a bit too hard but it's no doubt about it comparable to same model car fitted with the HK system. My issue was with the highs. I'm more of a high treble, loudness, etc. type guy. I feel like I was disappointed in that area of the sound. Tbh, and maybe I'm just getting older, but the improvement in all out "loudness" of the speakers was minimal. Noticeable yes but only by a notch. It's in no way whatsoever even close to an HK system when it comes to pure loudness of the speakers or the highs. If the amp cost me $800 - $1000 I'd be totally fine with it but at close to $1,700 I'm going to be dead honest here and say I was disappointed while listening last night and that turned into very disappointed today when I played the same music in my wife's 330 with HK system and instantly knew my highs cannot compare. For example, in my car, volume to the max if your in passenger seat you could hear my voice when I sing along. Whereas in my wife's car the same song volume at like 75% I couldn't even hear my own voice. Again, i'm making this judgement based off zero break in period and zero coding. Not sure what the coding is for. Audio quality or maybe so the ECU doesn't get wonky or maybe set parameters for the extra power consumption I'm not sure. But I'll be back to update if there are any changes. I do feel a bit awkward though as by what I've been reading I'm the first review that isn't singing praises for it. That's why I'm saying I'll be back to update. Gonna recheck all connections in case I missed something.

I brought the same amp for my G23 and would agree with you on some degree. However, you should contact bimmertech and have their sound technician send you some tailored EQ presets. I did this and the sound was much better when I requested higher treble. I have not upgraded the speakers, but suspect if I did, the sound would be much better.

Isn’t the upgrade to HK like $875? Seems worth it if you’re ordering. I wouldn’t order without it.

Tuning is the key. Please find a tuner or premade and see if you like it after that. I think you’ll feel much better. Also, add a real subwoofer if you get a chance. It’s icing on the cake

You need to have the amp tuned. I got some tuning files from BimmerTech and it made a HUGE difference in sound than the amp tuning straight out of the box.

I agree the tuning makes a big difference. My next question is the $1400 speakers upgrade worth it? It will likely cost more if you had to pay a professional install it. Thoughts?

It would be cool to have an audio meet to listen to everybody’s application. I think it would change some of the thoughts shared across the forum

That’s a great idea. Unfortunately we all probably live very far from each other.

As mentioned by others, contact Bimmertech and ask them for G20 with stock speakers tuning file. Assuming you have the HiFi 676 set-up in your 330i. If after trying that, it still doesn't meet your expectations, I would arrange a live tuning session with them, if possible.

I installed a dsp8 in my g20 about 6 months ago. I did not upgrade the stock speakers but did add a 12” sub in the trunk. I created a tune that I think sounds great. Feel free to pm me your email and I’ll send you a copy.

How much improvement did you get with the Sub install? I mostly listen to rock/metal/country and pop. Thanks!
