What does the UNLOCK button do on steptronic?

Hello everyone.
We've bought an 330e (2018) recently. There's an "unlock" button on the steptronic gearbox shift - what does it do? Do I need to press it every time I'm shifting gears (eg. P > N, or N > D)? I wasn't there to ask the previous owner, but my wife said he said it needs to be pressed every time. Is that correct? We don't have the manual unfortunately, so I though I'll ask here.

Yes you need to press it to switch between P -> R/D or N -> R/D
It´s designed like that to prevent you from accidentally using it without "unlocking"
